Boise's Pulp and Paper Mill and Sawmill in Jackson, Alabama, Gain
Recognition by Registration of the Facilities' Environmental
Management Systems to the ISO 14001 Standard
BOISE, Idaho, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boise Cascade Corporation
(NYSE: BCC) announced today that its pulp and paper mill and adjacent sawmill
in Jackson, Alabama, have become certified under ISO 14001. Established by
the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 14001 is recognized as
the leading standard for environmental management systems (EMS). Earning this
certification demonstrates the company's commitment to high standards of
environmental stewardship and to continuously improving the operations'
environmental activities.
According to Richard W. Merson, vice president and region manager, Alabama
Operations, "Excellent environmental performance has always been a priority
for the Jackson operations, and earning ISO 14001 certification demonstrates
that we have taken our environmental commitment to an even higher level. This
certification process took hard work and dedication by Jackson employees, and
I congratulate them on this significant achievement."
As part of ISO 14001 certification, Jackson developed an EMS that
specifies the appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure
consistent compliance with state and federal environmental regulations and
conformance to the company's environmental policy. The EMS establishes how to
set clear environmental objectives, document best practices, and periodically
review them to ensure continuous improvement. "The EMS is the road map that
ties all of our environmental activities together and provides the level of
documentation that will help ensure our continued outstanding environmental
performance," says Marty Parker, project manager and Total Quality manager at
the Jackson location. Parker adds, "The Jackson mill was already ISO
9001-certified for quality, so achieving ISO 14001 certification was the next
logical step."
