PTC and LG Industrial Systems Form Alliance with Chungbuk National University
in Korea
NEEDHAM, Mass., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/-- A technology education
initiative from PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the Product Development Company(TM), is
spreading rapidly throughout the Pacific Rim as educators seek to prepare
young people for careers in an increasingly technological regional economy.
Yesterday PTC announced its most recent educational program in the region
with Chungbuk National University and LG Industrial Systems (LGIS), an LG
business group subsidiary that manufactures electric equipment, automation
equipment and related systems. The three-way alliance is aimed at enhancing
the university's efforts to train the young engineers of the future.
PTC will provide its Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire engineering design software to
ensure that graduates are familiar with the latest advances in integrating
engineering and information technology when they go to work at companies like
LGIS.
Chungbuk National University and LGIS will work together to develop in-
service Pro/ENGINEER training opportunities for senior engineers already
working at LGIS.
The announcement took place at the headquarters of LGIS, which uses PTC
solutions for product development. LGIS Chief Executive Officer Kim Jeong-man
commented on the significance of the software grant.
"LGIS uses PTC solutions because they provide us with a competitive
advantage," he said. "We congratulate PTC and Chungbuk National University
for their foresight in placing this software in the hands of young engineers
who will soon bring their knowledge into the workplace."
Bang-Woong Shin, president of Chungbuk National University, said, "We will
add courses for teaching mechanical engineering and 3D design. With PTC's
help, our students will learn cutting-edge design techniques and strengthen
their competitiveness."
PTC Supports K-12 Schools Across the Region
Through its Design & Technology in Schools Program, PTC has also donated
its Pro/DESKTOP(R) 3D design software to secondary schools in eight Asian
nations. The initiative is expected to impact the schooling of millions of
children in the next year alone. Typically, educators use PTC software as a
tool to provide students with authentic information and communications
technology (ICT) experiences when learning about technology systems and the
engineering design process.
In addition, many Asian universities teach with Pro/ENGINEER(R) and
Windchill(R) solutions, which together comprise PTC's product development
system. Many educators prefer PTC products when preparing their engineering
students to use the latest real-world engineering technologies.
"An early exposure to technology education helps students develop flexible
problem-solving and ICT skills that will help them adapt to rapidly changing
workplace demands throughout their careers," said John Stuart, senior vice
president of education and partners at PTC. "PTC is committed to helping
students around the world fulfill their potential as workers and as citizens."
Business leaders and educators throughout the Pacific Rim have embraced
PTC's educational programs. Tey Chee Kiat, a senior engineer at Creative
Technology Ltd. in Singapore, maker of Soundblaster peripherals and other
computer entertainment products, said, "In today's competitive economy, it is
an advantage for Singapore to have a good supply of young people interested in
technology and engineering careers. The ability to hire young people who are
already familiar with PTC software solutions will be a competitive advantage
for Creative Technology and other Singapore companies."
In the past year, PTC - a global product lifecycle management software
company based in the United States - has formed regional partnerships to
support secondary school educators in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India,
Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. PTC's software donations
to educators worldwide recently won the company recognition from Business Week
magazine as the third most-generous in-kind giver among American corporations.
PTC's recent K-12 educational activities in the Pacific Rim include:
* Australia and New Zealand -- Both countries became involved in the
program two years ago. In Australia, 780 teachers have been trained and in
New Zealand, 268 teachers have been trained.
* China -- Some 42 teachers have been trained to teach with PTC software
in Guangdong province and 261 in Hong Kong.
* India -- In November, PTC and its business partner ITC Infotech
announced a gift of PTC software to government schools in Bangalore and to
several nationwide chains of private schools, including the prestigious Delhi
Public School. Some 40 teachers have already been trained.
* Japan -- By the end of February, a PTC engineer will have trained more
than 100 teachers in many parts of the nation including Tokyo, Osaka, and
Aichi to teach with PTC software.
* Singapore -- Also in October, PTC and Ngee Ann Polytechnic announced a
partnership to train a network of 120 teachers within the next two years, as
well as a regional Excellence in Design Competition.
* Taiwan -- Twenty teachers have been trained.
* Thailand -- In October, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced
plans to integrate PTC software into the national curriculum. Within the next
few years, Thailand will introduce the software in 30,000 secondary schools
reaching 10 million students.
More than 3 million middle and high school students around the world have
used PTC software in their Design & Technology studies, and more than 11,000
teachers have been trained to teach with PTC software. More than 75 percent
of secondary schools in the United Kingdom use PTC software to teach the
national curriculum in design and technology. PTC also provides its product
development software to more than 1,300 universities around the world.
