With over 2.8 billion subscribers worldwide in 16 years, GSM has
established itself as the fastest-growing communications technology in
history. Also growing fast is the level of fraud on GSM networks. In one
particularly virulent attack, a perpetrator uses a device known as a SIM
box - - a gateway between the Internet and a GSM network -- to bypass an
operator's international switch and termination charges, instead delivering
the call to the intended recipient as a local mobile-to-mobile call.
According to Don Reinhart, a communications fraud and revenue assurance
consultant, "SIM box fraud typically reduces a GSM carrier's revenues by
two to five percent, which translates into a multi-billion dollar problem
for the industry worldwide."
Tecore's fraud detection and elimination service helps operators combat
this type of fraud. In the first step, Tecore collects data through passive
network probes. Next, the data is analyzed, producing detailed profiles of
the fraudulent targets. Finally, Tecore works with the operator to develop
an elimination plan ranging from account deactivation to identifying the
location of the SIM box with sub-meter accuracy.
"Having deployed our mobile infrastructure products around the globe,
our customers are now seeing an unwanted byproduct of their success in the
form of SIM box fraud," said Casey Joseph, Chief Technology Officer, Tecore
Networks. "From detailed analysis and reporting to the ability to identify
location with sub-meter accuracy, we have developed an iron-clad detection
and elimination service that can significantly reduce the SIM box fraud in
the network in as little as 30 days."
