New Features Reduce Costs and Increase Effectiveness in Large-scale OS/390 And
z/OS Environments
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Amdahl IT Services, a strategic
member of the Fujitsu Group companies, today announced the immediate
availability of the Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) on Millennium(TM)
2000C and Millennium 2000E System/390(R) and z/OS(TM) compatible CMOS servers
and the availability of native FICON(TM) in Q1 2002.
IFL allows engines to be used exclusively for Linux, VIF and z/VM(TM)
4.1 or above for Linux, reducing software licensing costs for customers by
providing an alternative to high cost proprietary software. IFL will also be
available on OmniFlex(TM) and Millennium 700 and 2000A servers in Q1 2002.
FICON enables improved I/O performance and throughput, a greater number of
channel-to-control unit concurrent connections, increased link bandwidth,
greater distance from the FICON channel to the control unit or director and
greater channel device address support.
With the introduction of these features, Amdahl IT Services demonstrates
the company's continued commitment to delivering maximum value and lowest
total cost of ownership to System/390 customers.
"At Amdahl IT Services, we are committed to continuing to expand our
product line with new features, upgrades and services," said Susan Twietmeyer,
Amdahl IT Services vice president of Marketing and Strategic Operations.
"Linux is becoming an increasingly significant player in the data center and
FICON provides numerous benefits not offered by previous channel architecture.
We are pleased to make both available on our Millennium 2000C and 2000E
servers."
The Millennium 2000 Series servers are System/390 compatible CMOS servers
for large-scale OS/390(R) environments that demand consistent high performance
and continuous availability. The Millennium Series servers provide a
comprehensive feature set for maintaining non-stop availability, and
non-disruptive growth with Amdahl's Dynamic QuickCapacity(TM) feature.
Additionally, the Multiple Server Feature(TM) capability provides options for
sub-capacity licensing to manage software assets and help lower total cost of
ownership. A wide selection of models also provides customers more granularity
in managing the growth of their complexes, and more precision in meeting the
capacity requirements of customer applications and workloads.
The Millennium 2000 Series servers are the ideal solution for
System/390 compatible server consolidation. Operating and maintenance costs
can be dramatically reduced by replacing multiple older technology mainframes
or smaller CMOS servers with a Millennium server capable of scaling to
16 engines, 2,000 MIPS. The Multiple Server Feature capability, an Amdahl
exclusive, is a simple and powerful feature for managing software costs.
Multiple Server Feature capability creates multiple discrete servers with
unique serial numbers within a single Millennium footprint. This provides the
ability to license software per server, rather than on the basis of total
footprint capacity.
