SAN JOSE, CA UNITED STATES
Redpine's 802.11n solution achieves 300% higher data throughput vs.
competitive solutions; RS9110-based reference design is industry's first &
only fully certified 802.11n SDIO card solution

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- GSMA Mobile World Congress --
Redpine Signals, Inc., a leading developer of ultra low power
multi-standard OFDM and MIMO silicon-based solutions, today announced the
achievement of breakthrough power and performance of its recently released
Lite-Fi(TM) RS9110 for 802.11n. The RS9110-based reference design is the
world's first and only fully 802.11n Draft 2.0 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) SDIO
card solution, and includes certifications for WMM-PS (providing power
savings for time critical voice and video services) and WPS (Wi-Fi
Protected Service(TM), easing set-up between client devices and access
points). The RS9110 provides voice-over-Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) connectivity with a
power profile of over 200 hours of talk time using a 800 mAH battery, and
remains associated with a wireless network while consuming less than 1 mW
of power -- giving an unsurpassed power advantage for mobile handsets over
current solutions.

RS9110's performance and power advantages arise from six years of
research and significant innovations in all the relevant areas of
architecture, signal processing, algorithms and low-power implementation.
It has been hand-crafted to deliver significantly superior wireless
performance on a small silicon area. Wireless performance directly
translates to power savings, and the RS9110 stands out in performance. For
instance, it handles 54 Mbps streams in a ETSI-C multipath environment at
an industry-leading signal-to-noise ratio of 27 dB.

The 802.11n standard has inherent advantages of data transfer
efficiency compared to 802.11abg even when used in single antenna
configuration. Single stream 802.11n outperforms 802.11abg in wireless
performance, data throughput and power dissipation. "We had a challenge of
reducing the die size of such a solution so that it is similar or smaller
versus competitive 802.11abg solutions. Lite-Fi(TM) is architected at a
very fundamental level by utilizing raw hardware, hand-crafted single- and
multi-threaded processors at the right abstraction level to achieve very
small die size," said Venkat Mattela, Chief Executive Officer. "We strongly
believe that single stream 11abgn will replace any new 802.11abg
installations as 802.11n comes at the same cost with significant other
benefits," he added.

    Power Reduction

Wireless LAN usage commonly involves long periods of inactivity while
remaining connected to a wireless network. The RS9110 solution integrated
into a mobile device would remain connected consuming less than 1mW of
power, and near zero when not connected, offering negligible drain on the
battery. The RS9110's low power consumption capabilities enable over 200
hours of talk time on a standard 800 mAh battery at 3.7V.

The RS9110 Lite-Fi device incorporates advanced power management
circuitry along with an integrated & fully calibrated 32 kHz oscillator.
Competitive 802.11 WiFi chipset solutions typically use a low-frequency
clock source to remain responsive to wake-up events. This provides size and
cost advantages to Redpine's OEM/ODM partners.

    Proprietary Processor and Layer-2 Offload

The RS9110 Lite-Fi(TM) device incorporates a proprietary ultra low
power multi-threaded layer-2 processor that not only provides a unique
degree of protocol handling within the silicon but also provides a
power-efficient offload of some critical layer-3 functionality. The
RS9110's multi-threaded processor exploits the inherent characteristics of
layer-2 MAC protocol characteristics to reduce power and code size. In
addition, the Lite-Fi(TM) family of devices incorporates hardware assists
for layer-3 tasks, such as TCP checksum and security processing, including
AES, 3DES, SHA-1 and RNG. The results are further reductions in power
dissipation and host processor overhead for fixed mobile convergence
applications.

    Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM)

Redpine's RS9110-based SD card reference design is Wi-Fi CERTIFIED for
802.11n draft 2.0 by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and is the industry's first SDIO
card to achieve this certification. In addition to enabling our customers'
first-to-market advantage, Redpine's RS9110-based SD Card reference design
enables 300% more data throughput over a SDIO interface versus competing
solutions.

"802.11n draft 2.0 is an advanced standard for delivering increased
throughput, improved range and Quality of Service (QoS) for enhanced
multimedia capabilities. In achieving Wi-Fi CERTIFIED for 802.11n draft
2.0, Redpine Signals has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring industry
interoperability and the best experience for Wi-Fi users," said Wi-Fi
Alliance Senior Director, Karen Hanley.
