GeoTrust Expands Code Signing Product Portfolio to Include Privileged Certificates for Windows Mobile-based Smartphone

Mobile Application Developers Can Tap GeoTrust for the Industry's Best
Service, Most Flexible Usage Policy and Competitive Pricing

SAN JOSE, Calif., RSA Conference, Booth #1137, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ --
GeoTrust, Inc., the leader in identity verification, credentialing and
validation solutions, today announced an expansion to its Smartphone
Credentials(TM) code signing service to include privileged certificates for
Microsoft Windows Mobile-based environments. Software vendors use digital
certificates to sign, or authenticate, the code they provide to wireless
carriers and to protect end users against malicious code tampering. ISVs
working with GeoTrust receive superior customer service and the most
competitive pricing in the industry, helping them deliver safe and reliable
applications to customers.
The application security model for Smartphones is based on code signing.
Most programs, such as productivity applications and games, call for
unprivileged trust, and GeoTrust has provided certificates for these
applications since 2003. However, gaining access to many operating system
functions requires privileged execution mode. GeoTrust now offers both
privileged and unprivileged certificates at the same price and in blocks of
signing events that carry no expiration date. The certificates can be used to
digitally sign Pocket PC as well as Smartphone files.
Daniel Bouie, marketing manager for Microsoft's Mobile2Market program,
said: "Windows Mobile developers know GeoTrust's signing service as a fast and
reliable way to secure code before it's sent to carriers. Now that the company
is also offering Mobile2Market privileged-mode signing, ISVs can turn to
GeoTrust to protect the integrity of their most advanced apps."
"A fast, secure and cost-effective code signing process is a key
requirement for software companies that are developing applications for
wireless handsets such as Smartphones and PDAs," said Elaine Treacy, vice
president, marketing, Cicero Networks. "GeoTrust's enhanced service for
privileged certificates is a key requirement to support the range of high-
value applications being developed for mobile handsets."
GeoTrust uses the cryptographic root embedded in the Smartphone and Pocket
PC platforms to provide its code signing service. The service validates the
identity of the ISV and the integrity of its applications to ensure that code
released from the developer is not altered as it passes over the network and
is delivered to the device. This allows users to be confident downloading new
or upgraded software and helps them protect their devices from viruses and
other malware.
"As use of mobile devices quickly expands in the U.S. and abroad, GeoTrust
viewed a significant opportunity to work with Microsoft to supply the
credentials carriers demand and end users want to see to assure them that the
wireless network is secure," said Neal Creighton, president and chief
executive officer of GeoTrust. "Our ability to efficiently and accurately vet
individuals, companies, applications and devices, coupled with responsiveness
to customer needs that are superior to any other in our industry, make
GeoTrust the code signing partner of choice."
