RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dennis Gillings,
CBE, Chairman and CEO of Quintiles Transnational Corp., was joined
yesterday in the formal opening of Quintiles' new data processing facility
in Williamston, N.C., by North Carolina Commerce Department Secretary Jim
Fain, together with N.C. Rep. Edith Warren; Tommy Bowen, Chairman of the
Martin County Board of Commissioners; Stan Crowe, Chairman of the Martin
County Economic Development Commission; and Jane Patterson, Executive
Director of the e-NC Authority, a division of the North Carolina Rural
Economic Development Center.
Quintiles completed renovations and equipment installation at the new
10,000-square-foot data processing center in mid-January. An initial group
of 10 employees has started work and a second group is in training. The
company plans to create at least 60 new jobs at the facility over the next
three years. The center will be used primarily for data entry.
"Today, we welcome Williamston and Martin County to the Quintiles
family of 17,000 employees in more than 50 countries," Gillings said.
"We've been fortunate at Quintiles to enjoy steady growth since our
founding in North Carolina 25 years ago, and that has allowed us to expand
around the world as well as here in our home state. In this community,
we've found the right infrastructure and most importantly the right people
to help us build on our record of achievement. We're very glad to be here."
Secretary Fain commended Quintiles for establishing the data processing
center in rural North Carolina as an alternative to adding jobs in a
low-cost location overseas. "Dr. Gillings and his team believe they can
achieve a combination of acceptable cost and the same high-quality service
for their clients 'onshore' in Martin County," Fain said. "The company has
given us an opportunity to prove that we can make this model work."
Paula Brown Stafford, Executive Vice President, Quintiles Global Data
Management, thanked the people of Williamston, Martin County and the State
of North Carolina for their support in bringing another new location to
Quintiles' global data network.
"The data we process here in Williamston will help our customers and
regulatory authorities make important decisions about potentially
life-saving medications," Stafford said. "These new jobs contribute to the
advancement of healthcare here in America and around the world."
The data processing center was made possible in part by a One North
Carolina Fund grant of $120,000 to Martin County. Martin County also is
receiving grants from the Golden LEAF Foundation and the North Carolina
Rural Economic Development Center to renovate office space at the Northeast
Technology and Business Center, where the new data processing facility is
located. The Northeastern North Carolina Regional Economic Development
Commission also assisted with this project.
Quintiles, which has about 1,100 employees in North Carolina, also has
announced plans to create another 1,000 jobs over six years at its
headquarters and clinical operations offices near Research Triangle Park.
The Martin County jobs are not included in the RTP expansion plans.
