Mallinckrodt Announces Series of Seminars on Pulse Oximetry and Critical Care Medicine

Multi-City Schedule to Provide Educational Forum on Prevailing Issues and
Future Trends Associated with Critical Care and Pulse Oximetry

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the completion of pilots
in Boston, Atlanta and Chicago, Mallinckrodt's Nellcor Oximetry Business today
announced a series of educational seminars designed to provide a comprehensive
overview of the latest advances in pulse oximetry and the future direction of
critical care medicine. The announcement was made at the Society for Critical
Care Medicine (SCCM) conference in Orlando, Florida.
The remaining six half-day seminars will be held in Los Angeles and Dallas
as well as other major US markets from March through October. The seminars
will feature top scientific and medical speakers, including Dr. Thomas G.
Rainey, M.D., Director of Critical Care at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda,
Maryland and Chairman of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Breakthrough
Series on Cost Reduction and Outcomes Improvement in Adult Intensive Care, Dr.
Thomas Brady M.D., Associate Director of the Center for Innovative Minimally
Invasive Therapy (CIMIT) located in Boston and Dr. Arthur Combs, M.D., Vice
President of Respiratory Care and Product Safety at Mallinckrodt.
To date, the Mallinckrodt events have attracted over 200 high-level
physicians and respiratory care clinicians. It is expected that an additional
500 people will attend the seminars announced today.
The educational seminars provide a "think tank" setting, enabling
attendees to participate in a discourse on the prevailing issues and
advancements in pulse oximetry technology, specifically its increasing
prominence and crucial importance in the critical care arena. The conferences
also offer a glimpse into healthcare in the new millennium.
"As a result of rapidly developing technologies, the critical care
industry needs to more effectively educate the market and bring to its
attention the new advancements and availability of these technologic solutions
to clinical problems," said Dr. William T. Peruzzi, M.D., Medical Director,
Department of Respiratory Care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
"These forums are a necessary collaboration between medical device
manufacturers such as Mallinckrodt and the medical community. The conferences
are an excellent vehicle for providing information about the benefits of the
latest technology on the market today."
In addition, the conferences feature an in-depth focus and interactive
discussion and demonstration of Nellcor's latest pulse oximetry technology,
the N-395 pulse oximeter with Oxismart(r) XL Advanced Signal Processing and
SatSeconds(tm) which tackles the recurring issue of nuisance alarms and
motion. Since its introduction in October 1999, the N-395 has received
industry wide acceptance and to date has sold over 1100 units.
"We are extremely excited about the availability and performance of the N-
395 and we look forward to having this advanced technology incorporated into
all of our multi-parameter systems," said Fred W. Achilles, CBET, Director of
Clinical Engineering Services, Rush Medical Center in Chicago. "The key
issues for us will be the speed of technology development and the cost to
reinvest in the new systems."
