SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Accom(R)
(OTC Bulletin Board: ACMM), announced today that ARD Das Erste and ZDF German
Television, in a partnership venture, are using the Abekas(R) 6000 Video
Production Server at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games to produce over 300 hours
of live televised coverage which is being seen throughout Germany.
The Abekas 6000 making its first Olympic debut, is installed in ARD/ZDF's
main control room located within the IBC (International Broadcast Center)
which serves as the hub for worldwide Olympic coverage. The Abekas 6000 is
providing ARD/ZDF the capability of ingesting competition event footage as it
simultaneously creates clips for their finished productions while continuously
feeding 16 plasma video monitors, located on their production set. These
plasma monitors display athletes, events, medal awards ceremonies, highlights
footage and other moments of the Olympic games.
The installed Abekas 6000 is configured with 8 video SDI channels and
approximately 29 hours of storage at 50Mb/s compression bit rate. "If we used
a competitive server, we wouldn't have had as many 50Mb/s channels playing at
the same time and the operating system would have been Windows(R) NT and that
is something I really don't like because of the lack of reliability," said
Clemens Biallas one of ARD/ZDFs Abekas 6000 Lead Operators. "I really like the
fact that the Abekas 6000 is based on a stable real-time operating system," he
said.
"I'm very impressed with the Abekas 6000, especially because of how simple
it was to install and how easy it was to learn," commented Axel Wendholt, Head
of Engineering, for ARD. "Our operators have never seen this system before and
they understood it very quickly. I am also extremely satisfied with the 6000's
performance. It has run perfectly for two weeks now and continues to do so
since the games began. It is a very trusting server," concluded Wendholt.
According to Oliver Grossmann, one of ARD/ZDFs Abekas 6000 Lead Operators,
"We chose the Abekas 6000 for this event because of its ease of operation
during production and its prompt ability to recall video clips that are then
fed into 16 plasma monitors on our set. With the Abekas 6000 we are able to
auto edit record from tape and at the same time, create, edit, screen and
title clips all while quickly recalling them to feed the 16 monitors. A
traditional tape machine could never handle this. Also, if we used a tape
machine for each of the 16 video monitors we would not have been able to
rapidly produce as many current events clips to display. It has saved us a lot
of pre-production time. In addition, the fact that this server is not PC-based
and has its own dedicated control panel, which mimics one of a VTR, makes our
job so much easier. It was so easy for me to train others because it is so
easy to learn."
Gearhouse Broadcast, based in London, England was the systems integrator
on this project for ARD/ZDF. They also provided installation and technical
support for the Abekas 6000.
