Where the Buffalo Roam in Northern Utah During the Olympics; Press Briefing & Walking Tour Scheduled for Friday, February 15

WHO The Davis County Council of Governments, Inc. will report on the
status of the Antelope Island herd of buffalo and the decorated,
fiberglass buffalo that are part of the Utah Buffalo Round-up.
Details on special events and the specific locales of the decorated
buffalo will be provided during a press briefing at the Utah Media
Center. A downtown Salt Lake City walking tour following the
briefing will be available to interested journalists and
photographers. Reporting on the buffalo will be: Rick Mayfield,
Utah Buffalo Round-up project manager; Wilf Sommerkorn, Davis
County director of Community and Economic Development; Davis County
Commission Chair Dannie R. McConkie; Layton City Mayor Jerry
Stevenson; as well as an artist.

WHAT The Utah Buffalo Round-up, a fun public arts project sponsored by
the Davis County Council of Governments, Inc., has on exhibit
during the Olympic Games 43 life-size buffalo beauties that have
been painted, pomaded and dressed up by Utah artists, designers and
craftsmen. These decorated buffalo have been corralled in several
viewing locations for the enjoyment of Olympic visitors -- from the
Layton Hills Mall and Antelope Island to downtown Salt Lake City.
The project will continue until September 2002 when the buffalo
will be auctioned, with net proceeds going to local charities and
           to Olympic Aid.

A herd of 600 buffalo roam Antelope Island State Park, which is
approximately 50 miles northwest of Salt Lake City. Located in the
heart of metropolitan Utah, the island has been spared the changes
           of urbanization.

WHEN Friday, February 15 from 11:30 a.m. to noon

Note: A walking tour following the briefing is scheduled and will
                  last approximately one hour.

WHERE The Utah Media Center, 3rd Floor, ExpoMart, 230 West 200 South,
           Salt Lake City

WHY The intent of the Utah Buffalo Round-up is to promote community
spirit and pride throughout Utah. Already, decorated buffalo have
made appearances in 30 community activities, including summer
parades from Brigham City to Draper, Utah. This fun exhibit is
patterned after other similar community arts projects that have
been successfully completed in many North American and European
           cities.
