Customers Utilize Increased Application and User Visibility for
Improved Security
SAN JOSE, Calif., RSA Conference, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Network- and storage-security market leader Hifn(TM) (Nasdaq: HIFN) announced
today the availability of MeterFlow version 7.0 flow classification software
package with support for enhanced security policy enforcement. The new
MeterFlow package recognizes and correlates applications and users to their
corresponding data flows and network traffic providing customers a higher
level of visibility into stateful flow processing service applications.
MeterFlow solves emerging problems facing networking vendors, such as
identifying hard-to-track applications, isolating exact users of network
applications, and enhancing security.
End-customers use the new MeterFlow application information to enhance
policy enforcement and increase security capabilities in appliances deployed
throughout the network. MeterFlow's patented technology extensively analyzes
application-specific data in real time, allowing it to determine the content
and identify the application of each packet as well as the relationships
between packets and network users. MeterFlow v7.0 also provides superior
tracking of protocol connections over both IPv4 and IPv6, dynamically, as
network sessions are created for complex protocols used in applications such
as VoIP, IM, and P2P.
"MeterFlow is very important to our customers who use the information to
offer a new breed of layer 7-aware network security appliances and LAN
infrastructure equipment," said Robert Friend, director of product marketing
at Hifn. "The deeper, more granular application visibility provided by
MeterFlow is critical for enhanced policy enforcement. MeterFlow is the ideal
solution for the new Unified Threat Management (UTM) network security and
network access control appliances, as well as supporting the growing number of
voice, multimedia and interactive applications."
In the emerging interactive networking applications like peer-to-peer
(P2P), security appliances need to identify the P2P protocols in order to
limit and control their use of network resources as well as block rogue
content that permeates firewalls, such as malware, viruses, and worms. To
assist firewalls, MeterFlow features heuristic flow classification
capabilities in order to track peer to peer protocols that perform port
hopping. Furthermore, MeterFlow helps identify HTTP-tunneled P2P protocols by
leveraging MeterFlow's HTTP content classification capabilities.
In LAN Security applications, MeterFlow enhances layer 7 controls by
providing direct control information to UTM appliance applications, allowing
the security control system to recognize normal application behaviors in
network traffic. For example, MeterFlow identifies the file transfer type and
the associated data type of an IM session or the HTTP traffic type and precise
network connections of a web application during the negotiation, and prior to
the start of each session. This allows the UTM appliance to protect the LAN
from malicious known and unknown malware by filtering potentially nefarious
network traffic from innocuous flows by individual application sessions.
Hifn also provides MeterFlow Performance Metrics, a powerful software
package, designed to collect precise statistics for each unique user-based
application flow. While collecting each statistic, MeterFlow Performance
Metrics also measures 29 metrics of flow performance such as, jitter,
application response times, connection response times, routing metrics, and
traffic metrics useful for SLA verification and RMON-2 agents.
Availability
MeterFlow v7.0 and MeterFlow Performance Metrics are available now.
MeterFlow v7.0 is backwards compatible with previous versions of MeterFlow.
Customers interested in evaluating MeterFlow's powerful application and
protocol recognition capabilities can request an evaluation version from their
local sales representative.
