"We recognize the importance of being a responsible corporate citizen,"
said John Tyson, chairman and CEO of Tyson Foods. "This report charts our
efforts as we seek to do what's right for all our stakeholders. It describes
precisely how we provide safe food to the marketplace, serve as stewards for
the animals, land and environment and act as partners in our communities. It
also explains how we treat people, including our Team Members, consumers,
suppliers and the communities where we live and operate."
This is the first time such a comprehensive overview of the company's
corporate responsibility efforts has been compiled in one report. Portions of
such information have been previously included in other company
communications.
The first section of the Sustainability Report, entitled "Who We Are,"
discusses ethics and the people at Tyson Foods. It covers such areas as
Tyson's Code of Conduct, ethics training, Team Member Bill of Rights,
diversity and inclusion, wages and benefits and leadership training. It also
highlights the company's growing chaplaincy program.
The second section, "What We Do," addresses food safety, animal well-
being, environment and safety and health. It includes information on such
things as Tyson's food safety and research laboratories, foodWISE(R) food
safety education program, mission statement on animal well-being,
environmental management systems and the company's workplace safety policies.
The final section, "How We Do It," provides information on shareholders,
suppliers and communities. Areas highlighted include the company's business
strategy, compliance with financial reporting laws and relationship with
independent farm families. It also describes Tyson's donations of food and
money. For example, Tyson donated 6.3 million pounds of product, worth
$8.6 million, to food banks and hunger relief programs nationally in 2005. In
addition, the company gave more than $3 million in monetary corporate
contributions to charities and non-profit organizations, primarily in Tyson
plant communities.
