LEXINGTON, Mass., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- At more than 25 sites across the
United States, Raytheon Company will showcase the accomplishments of its
engineers during the 50th annual National Engineers Week, Feb. 18-24.
As a corporate affiliate of National Engineers Week, Raytheon will
recognize the company's engineering and technical workforce at special events
that are also aimed at promoting the engineering profession to a new
generation of engineers.
"Raytheon's technological achievements and engineering excellence have
been instrumental to the company for more than 75 years, " said Philip Cheney,
Raytheon's vice president of Engineering. "From its early days as a maker of
radio tubes, to its development of radar technology during World War II and
today's state-of-the-art infrared seekers, Raytheon scientists have helped to
pave the way for the success of our company and our industry."
One of Raytheon's engineering legends is Percy Spencer who is most famous
for his invention of the microwave oven. In 1945, Spencer adapted World War II
radar technology to invent microwave cooking. Spencer was inducted into the
Inventor's Hall of Fame in 1999.
"Looking to the future, Raytheon's challenge is to continue to attract and
develop world-class talent," added Cheney, Raytheon's chief engineer.
In 2001, Raytheon expects to hire approximately 7,000 engineers,
scientists and other professionals. Currently, the company employs
approximately 28,000 engineers worldwide in a variety of disciplines,
including electro-optics, systems engineering, software, radio frequency
systems, processing systems, materials and processes, and mechanical and
structural systems.
Established in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers,
