New OctetString White Paper: Virtual Directories and Identity Federation With SAML

New White Paper From Virtual Directory Software Leader Explains How Its
Flagship Product Works With SAML Services to Ease and Accelerate Deployment of
Web Services in Federated Identity Environments

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- OctetString, the leader in
virtual directory technology, has published a new white paper explaining how
its flagship software suite, Virtual Directory Engine (VDE), speeds the
deployment and extends the reach of federated identity services. The new
paper describes how VDE, in concert with SAML solutions, such as COREid(TM) 7
from OctetString's partner Oblix, help IT infrastructure architects and
application developers bring secure Web services to business users and
consumers.
OctetString has timed the availability of the new white paper specifically
for attendees of this week's 14th Annual RSA Conference in San Francisco.
Enterprises with multiple groups of application users -- both inside and
outside of the network boundaries of the organization -- "federate" user
identity information as a means of simplifying the authorization and
authentification process. By joining and "federating" sources of identity
data, an enterprise provides application developers, who in many cases are
creating Web services that operate across network boundaries, with fewer
places to seek user information for authorization and authentification
purposes.
Virtual Directory technology, such as OctetString's VDE 3.0, augments
federated identity solutions by helping them make immediate and extensive use
of existing identity sources within the enterprise. Providers of federated
identity services can use virtual directories to deal with inevitable data
differences from different user organizations and bridge together asserted
attribute information with attributes managed by the service provider. The
technology is referred to as "virtual" because VDE creates temporary
contextual and auditable views of existing identity information throughout an
organization for the use of applications and service providers.
The white paper also describes how OctetString is adding the ability to
communicate directly with SAML-enabled products, such as Oblix's COREid 7
using the Security Assertions Markup Language (SAML).
"A Virtual Directory product that can work with SAML-based services means
existing legacy systems and new Web services can securely access the same set
of identity information in an enterprise using existing native protocols, such
as LDAP, as well as new federated identity standards," said Clayton Donley,
CTO and Founder of OctetString. "This saves companies the cost of managing
parallel infrastructures and accelerates the deployment of applications to new
user communities."
