"Andrew will be creating and implementing media strategies for AARP's
important health care agenda," said Mark Kitchens, AARP Director of Media
Relations. "His solid tenure on Capitol Hill coupled with his insightful
perspectives on America's health care system will help AARP promote its
stance on the critical health issues our nation is currently tackling."
Nannis joins AARP from the office of U.S. Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO),
where he served as Press Secretary, acting as the Senator's spokesman.
While there, Nannis worked heavily with national media and Congressional
Correspondents, drafted materials and provided political and legislative
communications counsel. During this time, Nannis also aided the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee, managing Chairman Rahm Emanuel's press
requests during election week.
"I am thrilled to join AARP at a time when its voice is only becoming
more relevant as our population ages," said Nannis. "With 78 million baby
boomers over the age of 50, health care will become an increasingly
important focus for the United States and I look forward to helping AARP
communicate its position on these issues."
Nannis previously was Communications Director for U.S. Congressman Pete
Stark (D-CA), where he managed all aspects of Congressman Stark's
communications efforts. In addition, Nannis has worked for U.S. Congressman
Marion Berry (D-AR) and has handled special projects for Senator John Kerry
during his run for presidency.
Prior to his time on Capitol Hill, Nannis was Director, Public Affairs
for Pharmaceutical Research and Manufactures of America. There he oversaw
the communications strategy for multiple state campaigns, creating
environments ripe for favorable legislation to be passed. He managed a
national network of communications professionals and worked closely with
top-tier media.
Nannis also brings a strong public relations agency background, having
worked for Ketchum Public Relations and Eisner Petrou and Associates as a
Director.
