Internet Connection Technologies Among Hundreds of New Products Featured At Embedded Systems Conference Spring

Survey Shows That Engineers Gathering At Chicago Industry Showcase Place
Priority on Seeing Latest Products, Technology

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 200 companies that
provide products and services for the fast growing embedded computing market
are headed to Chicago's McCormick Place South for the Embedded Systems
Conference Spring, March 2-4, 1999. Thousands of designers and engineers will
be on hand to see an exhibition of the latest tools and technologies that go
into the intelligent electronic devices that are used in our homes, cars,
offices, and factories.
The three-day conference and exhibition will reflect the growing
importance of Internet connectivity for electronic devices of all types, not
just personal computers. In a survey of attendees at the last Embedded
Systems Conference, more than 90 percent of the respondents said that the
chance to see the latest technology and the scope of vendors/products was what
attracted them to the event. In Chicago next month, attendees will have a
chance to see the latest in microprocessors, components and software tools
that enable Internet access from cellular phones, pagers and televisions,
among other exciting new technologies.
"In a very few years, more embedded devices than desktop computers will be
connected to the Internet, and new products to be introduced at the Embedded
Systems Conference Spring reflect this trend," said Lindsey Vereen, editor of
EMBEDDED SYSTEMS PROGRAMMING magazine, when asked about the new products to be
shown at the spring exhibition. "We're seeing a groundswell of product
introductions to support embedded Internet, including web servers and
browsers, Java tools, communications protocols, and wireless technology."
Connectivity products to be shown at the Embedded Systems Conference
Spring include:

    * Modem technologies for use with devices other than computers.
    * A web-server toolkit that enables data networking devices to be managed
      and controlled over the Internet.
    * A full-featured web server that can be used with any type of processor
      or operating system.
    * A new wireless modem for connectivity to corporate networks or Internet
      applications with small handheld computers.
    * E-mail software for embedded devices such as cellular phones, Portable
Digital Assistants (PDAs) and set-top boxes.

Attendees at the November 1998 Embedded Systems Conference were surveyed
following the event. Ninety-six percent of the survey respondents said that
they were attracted to the conference because it provided a chance to see the
latest technology. Ninety-two percent said that they were attracted to the
conference because of the scope of vendors and products exhibited.
"There's always a lot of excitement on the show floor at the Embedded
Systems Conferences," said Jim Turley, senior editor of MICROPROCESSOR REPORT.
"This is the place where industry leaders show the tools and components that
inspire new applications and help shorten design cycles. In addition to the
great variety of connectivity tools, other next generation technologies we
will see at the spring show include single chip computers and single board
computers, a variety of software tool kits, and updated operating system
technology."
Turley is one of the 73 worldwide experts on embedded systems who will
present technical classes and tutorials in conjunction with the exhibition.
The show also includes special events such as a keynote speech by
Bjarne Stroustrup, the inventor of the C++ programming language, a panel
discussion on real-time operating systems, and a special guest lecture by
Hector de J. Ruiz, president of the Semiconductor Products Sector of Motorola.
Additionally, each day of the Embedded Systems Conference Spring begins with
"Shop Talk" discussion groups, where attendees meet and share their opinions
on current trends and experiences with specific projects.
