ISLANDIA, NY USA
Outlines How C-Level Business Significance of Lower-Level Security Events
Present Critical Challenges to it Managers

ISLANDIA, N.Y., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At the RSA Conference
2005 in San Francisco today, Computer Associates International, Inc.
(NYSE: CA) Executive Vice President Russell Artzt said Sarbanes-Oxley and
other corporate governance regulations have sparked a "fundamental shift" in
IT security processes and practices.
In a keynote address entitled "New Realities in Security Management --
Enabling the Transparent Enterprise," Artzt said challenges presented by
formerly low-level security threats, such as the infection of a single PC by a
virus, have now become business governance issues with potential significance
for C-level executives.
"The Sarbanes-Oxley Act doesn't simply require businesses to 'tighten up'
their controls. It requires a whole new level of transparency into data,
processes and accountability," Artzt said. "That simple premise has sparked a
fundamental shift in the role of security -- transforming it from a low-level
concern of IT professionals to an essential part of business strategy."
Artzt outlined the new relationship between specific security-related
events and core, end-to-end business services -- including the impact of such
events on service availability, the costs associated with any service
interruptions, and the business consequences for customers and other third
parties from those interruptions.
Artzt also discussed the technical challenges associated with creating a
"transparent enterprise" in which IT security organizations can ensure their
ability to answer key governance questions, including:

     * Who is making decisions?
     * Why are they making them?
     * Where is the evidence to support these decisions?
     * What are the consequences of these decisions?

"With true transparency, all the components of a complex infrastructure
are tied together," Artzt said. "The relative importance of every process,
every bit of data, every event or transaction is easily understood within the
larger context of business operations, strategy and goals. That kind of
transparency enables better control and oversight-which drives business
results."
Artzt added that security's new role requires a re-thinking of security
technologies, including closer, policy-based integration of processes across
specific security functions and a growing emphasis on the linkage of security
events to business impact.
"We need to ensure that security is not only a part of the fabric of our
IT environment-but part of the very DNA of our business," Artzt said.

RSA Conference 2005 is one of the industry's leading IT security events,
attracting attendees and exhibitors from all over the world. CA is one of the
world's leading providers of security management software.
