Sexton Named Publisher at Anchorage Daily News

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The McClatchy Company
(NYSE: MNI) today announced that Mike Sexton, president of Central Maine
Newspapers since 1995, was named publisher of the Anchorage Daily News.
Sexton, 50, will begin his new job in early March. He replaces Fuller
Cowell, who retired for health reasons last November.
"Mike's a seasoned newspaper executive with a strong track record of
achievement," said Gary Pruitt, president and chief executive officer of
McClatchy. "His reputation as a leader devoted to employees, journalistic
excellence and community service makes him a perfect fit for Alaska and the
Anchorage Daily News."
In Maine, Sexton led two newspapers -- the Kennebec Journal in Augusta,
the state's capital, and the Central Maine Morning Sentinel in Waterville
-- both of which are owned by the Seattle Times Company. From 1992 to 1995,
Sexton was publisher of Publications, Inc., a direct marketing company, in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and vice president of its parent, Gazette Media Company.
Sexton also has been publisher of community newspapers in Wisconsin, Indiana
and Missouri. He began his newspaper career as an advertising sales
representative in his hometown of Leavenworth, Kansas.
"I'm delighted to be joining the talented management team at the Anchorage
Daily News," said Sexton. "The newspaper has a proud and rich tradition of
public service, quality journalism and commitment to Alaska. I look forward
to building on that solid foundation."
In January, Sexton was named "Business Person of the Year" by the Chamber
of Commerce of Central Maine for successfully organizing an economic
development group of 32 communities to draw commerce to the area. He is the
first non-native of Maine to win the award in its 17-year existence.
"Mike's extensive background and experience make him the ideal choice to
lead the Anchorage Daily News into the 21st century," said Bob Weil, vice
president, operations at McClatchy. "In addition to his outstanding
professional qualifications, he's an outdoors enthusiast who will easily adapt
to the Alaska lifestyle."
Sexton and his wife, Juna, will be moving to Anchorage within the next
several weeks. He has two grown children from a previous marriage.
"I look forward to making our home in Alaska and working to build a great
future for a great state," Sexton said.
