Sun Furthers Lead in Telecom Market Adding Netra(TM) High Availability Software to Sun cPCI Telecom Blade Servers

Sun Strengthens Netra(TM) Telecom Server Offerings With First Complete
Integrated Hardware/Software Platform for Wireless and IP Networks

    CANNES, France, 3GSM World Congress, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced it is the first major
Internet computing company to offer an integratable hardware/software platform
geared for developing next-generation network infrastructures with 99.999
percent availability. Sun's Netra(TM) High Availability (HA) Suite 2.0
software, now available worldwide, rounds out the company's carrier-grade
platform with software that is designed to maintain continuous availability
for telecom applications.
Sun is the leader in the telecom server market, beating out Hewlett
Packard, IBM and Compaq in 2001, according to a new report from Cahners
In-Stat/MDR*. Today's announcement furthers Sun's commitment to the telecom
server industry which the Cahners report predicts will reach almost $8 billion
in 2005.
The Netra HA Suite offers software redundancy "out of the box," helping
network equipment providers build telecom server platforms with virtually no
single point of failure. With features such as reliable network file system
and boot server, carrier-grade transport protocol, cluster events and
checkpoints, the Netra HA Suite 2.0 can be used to create a highly available,
dynamically scalable cluster of distributed nodes, or augment existing HA
frameworks.
"Nine out of 10 leading network equipment providers are already deploying
Sun-based solutions in telecom networks, so we understand the demanding
computing requirements of this market," said Pat Deagman, vice president and
general manager of the Network Equipment Provider group at Sun. "Our customers
want to work with a vendor that knows the importance of reliability,
availability and serviceability in the telecommunications industry. The Netra
HA Suite software, combined with Sun's Netra telecom servers, is designed to
meet the industry's needs for continuous availability solutions."

First High Availability Computing Platform for Telecom/Wireless
Applications
The new Netra HA Suite 2.0, combined with the robust Solaris(TM) Operating
Environment and Sun's Netra ct series of cPCI telecom blade servers, helps
telecommunications companies achieve five nine's availability for telecom and
wireless applications. The HA software is optimized for core and access
network applications such as softswitches, radio network controllers, base
station controllers, media gateways, signaling gateways, as well as adjunct
telecom servers requiring uninterrupted availability.
The Netra HA Suite is available on Sun's Netra systems such as Netra ct
telecom blade servers. The Netra ct is a specialized CompactPCI-based server
offering rack optimized, ruggedized design with NEBS Level 3 certification
and AC/DC power options for the demanding wireless infrastructure environment.
In addition, Sun's Netra CP CompactPCI boards provide a low-cost, highly
integrated solution for network equipment providers and original equipment
manufacturers. Sun also provides network management software to complete its
end-to-end network infrastructure offering.
"Server vendors are only beginning to realize the high growth opportunity
in the telecom server blade market," said Mark Melenovsky, Research Manager
for IDC's Global Enterprise Server Solutions Group. "With this announcement,
Sun leverages its one to two year headstart on its peers."

Netra High Availability Suite 2.0 Features and Benefits

The main features of the Netra High Availability Suite 2.0 include:
-- Foundation Services: These "out-of-the-box" services assist network
equipment providers in implementing reliable applications and a highly
available cluster without spending time and money on additional
development. Software redundancy for features such as NFS and the
HA-enhanced boot server help ensure maximum uptime of the file system
and reboot of nodes, applications and the operating system regardless
       of hardware and software failures.
-- Application Services: These open APIs provide building blocks for a
custom fail-over framework, helping network equipment providers ease
the migration from proprietary to commercially available frameworks.
Features such as checkpointing and event services help developers
deliver continuous availability, by preserving application data even if
a node or application fails, and enabling applications to easily share
       information.

As part of the beta program, Sun partners, such as Hughes Software Systems
tested their products on Netra HA Suite 2.0.
"In testing the Netra HA Suite 2.0 in a prototype for a softswitch media
gateway controller, the solution's performance and flexibility have exceeded
our expectations," said Arun Kumar, president and managing director with
Hughes Software Systems, specialists in Convergent Network software and a
leading communications software company. "Sun's comprehensive approach --
hardware, operating system and middleware -- helps us reduce the time and
costs associated with developing next-generation network infrastructures."
