FloodGuard 1.5 Offers Enhanced User Interface and Improved Performance
Making It Possible to Secure Networks Even More Quickly
SAN JOSE, Calif., RSA Conference, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Reactive Network
Solutions today unveiled the latest version of its flagship product, the
FloodGuard(TM) system, a distributed software application based on patent-
pending technology combined with a network appliance, that quickly detects and
blocks distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in an enterprise data
center or a service provider's network. FloodGuard 1.5 offers an enhanced
user interface and improved performance that make it possible for network
administrators to secure their networks from denial-of-service attacks even
more quickly than before.
The FloodGuard system is the only DDoS product on the market that can shut
out a DDoS attack without shutting down the network. These attacks, the most
serious of which "flood" a network, can severely disrupt organizations that
rely on Internet applications such as e-commerce or email to function.
The latest version of the FloodGuard system includes a new, intuitive user
interface that enables administrators to be rapidly informed of ongoing
attacks and take actions to mitigate them. It handles up to
2.5 Gigabits/second of traffic bandwidth and a range of physical mediums from
DS3 to GE and OC3 to OC48.
"Distributed denial-of-service attacks have rapidly become the Internet's
newest, most insidious security issue," said Counse Broders, principal
analyst, Internet Services, for Current Analysis. "By threatening the ability
to deliver on the promise of availability, one that customers have come to
expect, organizations are finding that distributed denial-of-service attacks
come at an expense they can not afford. Since there are also related overall
network security risks that can result from these attacks, organizations
should make mitigating them a key objective of their security strategy."
Denial-of-service Attacks Are on the Rise
According to the 2001 Computer Security Institute-FBI Computer Crime and
Security survey, 36 percent of the respondents reported DoS attacks in 2001,
up from 27 percent who reported such attacks in the previous survey. Such an
attack in late January launched by a group of online vandals calling
themselves "The Yes Men" cut off access to the World Economic Forum for
several days, making it the second year in a row in which the event's Internet
site has come under attack. The same survey reports specific respondents
losing millions of dollars from single DoS attacks.
"Denial-of-service attacks are on the rise and the effects can be
devastating," said Dr. Edward Komissarchik, president of Reactive Network
Solutions. "The coordinated attacks in February 2000 on Amazon.com, CNN.com,
eBay and Yahoo! cost those companies a cumulative $1.2 billion -- an
astronomical sum even for those large companies. Some smaller businesses
could literally be put out of business by a serious attack. FloodGuard 1.5
detects and stops such attacks, offering peace of mind to both network
administrators and CEOs," said Dr. Komissarchik.
More About the FloodGuard System
As a distributed application, the FloodGuard system is deployed throughout
the network. FloodGuard Detectors are installed near routers, firewalls or
any other network segment that is a flooding attack target. FloodGuard
Actuators are installed near upstream routers including ones that are watched
by Detectors. Detectors detect DoS attacks and these detection alarms are
dispersed to all relevant upstream Actuators. Each Actuator receiving an
alarm autonomously confirms the presence of these attacks back to the
Detector. The Actuator optionally mitigates the attack installing a set of
filtering rules in the associated router that blocks bad traffic while letting
through good traffic. Once the attack subsides on any given segment, the
relevant Actuators automatically remove the filtering rules.
Several unique features differentiate the FloodGuard system from other
network security products:
-- The system has a non-invasive architecture as opposed to being an
inline device capable of causing its own network failure and
vulnerability.
-- The system not only detects attacks and their origins, it can
semi-automatically or automatically mitigate them; many DDoS products
just detect the presence of attacks.
-- Unlike other products that use signature-based pattern recognition
alone to detect attacks -- and consequently can only detect known
attacks -- the system uses anomaly-based pattern recognition and
behavior recognition, which enables it to detect previously unseen
attacks as well.
-- The system has no centralized management requirement and no single
point of failure, which means it can scale easily throughout
enterprise and service provider networks.
Availability and Pricing
FloodGuard 1.5 is available immediately. Pricing is based on the network
size and topology being protected and starts at $2,500 per month.
About Reactive Network Solutions
Reactive Network Solutions, founded in April 2000, offers intelligent
networking systems that maximize network availability by improving security.
Reactive Network introduced its first product, the FloodGuard(TM) system, in
September 2001. The FloodGuard system, a distributed application with patent-
pending technology combined with a network appliance, quickly detects and
blocks distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in an enterprise data
center or a service provider's network. The FloodGuard system is the only
DDoS product on the market that can shut out a DDoS attack without shutting
down the network.
Reactive Network's founding team includes business and technical
executives from Aspect Communications, SRI, Sun, and Xerox PARC. Investors
include the venture firms Red Rock and Athena Technology Ventures. The
company is headquartered in Redwood City, California. For more information,
