City to Test GSM Wireless Positioning Software From Digital Earth Systems
To Improve Public Safety
CANNES, France, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Earth Systems today
announced that the City of New York Department of Information Technology and
Telecommunications (DOITT) will trial its recently announced GeoMode wireless
location positioning software with the City's public safety and emergency
services. This trial will test GeoMode's ability to pinpoint the location of
wireless cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) under emergency
conditions. A similar capability has been the focus of an FCC mandate passed
in the United States in 1996 that enforces all wireless carriers to determine
the location of cell phones to within 100 meters.
New York City officials have decided to evaluate the company's cell phone
location software initially for applications related to public safety and
field operations within Manhattan. If the GeoMode trial is successful, the
City could use GeoMode to monitor the exact location of public safety
personnel and improve emergency response and emergency communications
management.
GeoMode software collects and analyzes cell phone signal strength data
from the base stations, which it then processes to accurately locate wireless
phones and PDAs. GeoMode does not require any modifications to wireless
networks, base stations or handsets. The system can be implemented
immediately on existing wireless systems for several hundred thousand dollars,
a cost that is vastly less than the millions estimated for alternative network
overlay or similar technologies.
"We are impressed with recent innovations in wireless location positioning
and we are looking forward to testing all possible applications," said Al
Leidner, Citywide GIS director at DOITT. According to Jim McGeough, president
of Digital Earth Systems, "Our software solution for location positioning
avoids the complexity and cost associated with network overlay and radio
transmitter-based technologies. We are confident that the DOITT trial will
show that GeoMode meets all mandated accuracy requirements and can help save
lives today." The system also includes a GPS option, which can track any GPS
enhanced handset. The company is demonstrating GeoMode GSM and GPS options at
the 3GSM World Congress being held in Cannes this week.
