Mitsubishi Electric Telecom and Openwave Deliver Superior User Experience With
Rich Colour Graphics and Improved Music Quality
CANNES, France, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open, IP-based
communication infrastructure software and applications, and Mitsubishi
Electric Telecom, today announced the availability of the first colour,
M-Services compliant mobile phone, the Trium Eclipse, with multimedia download
capabilities and GPRS*.

The Trium Eclipse handset -- with 256 colours packed onto its large
display measuring 120 by 143 pixels and polyphonic sound -- is a true
multimedia device. It features M-Services compliant multimedia download
functionality in compliance with the Openwave(R) Download Fun specification
(as recommended in the GSM Association's M-Services Guidelines, published in
June, 2001) and is interoperable with the Openwave Download Fun Server
solution. M-Services functionality will enable Trium Eclipse end users to
download richer and more advanced content than can currently be downloaded
through simple SMS-based services.
Openwave and Mitsubishi are also actively working together with content
providers to optimise their content to take advantage of the Trium Eclipse's
advanced multimedia capabilities. This means that Trium Eclipse users will
have the ability to personalize their phones with music, colour pictures,
graphics, and polyphonic ring tones.
"To consumers, colour graphics and realistic sound can make all the
difference in whether or not to purchase a new handset. Until now, consumers
have personalised their phones through simple ring tones and graphics using
SMS messaging. The Trium Eclipse, coupled with the capabilities of Download
Fun, means that consumers will now be able to download personal colour photos
and music files as well as server-based content from professional media
companies. The end result is exciting new services and a compelling reason to
upgrade to a new GPRS handset," said Mark Taguchi, Openwave's director of
M-Services worldwide.
"By combining our colour-screen technology with GPRS* and the M-Services
features, we are bringing the consumer the opportunity to explore the
possibilities of the mobile Internet in a whole new dimension," said Yasuhide
Iwata, president of Mitsubishi Electric Telecom.
The Mobile Services (M-Services) Initiative was created by the GSM
Association to drive adoption and usage of mobile Internet services with the
rollout of GPRS. Key components of M-Services include a graphical user
interface for mobile handsets and the ability to download rich, multimedia
files such as polyphonic ringtones, wallpapers and other graphical images to
the handset. In the case of the Trium Eclipse, in full colour, the downloads
are accomplished securely and reliably through Download Fun, as specified in
the M-Services Guidelines.
Openwave Download Fun is a structured system for downloading larger and
richer content -- such as colour graphics, digital pictures, Java MIDlets and
music files -- which will enable communication service providers (CSPs) to act
as a trusted agent to ensure security, reliability and payment for content
downloads. In addition, Download Fun allows CSPs to implement flexible and
creative billing and revenue models through detailed usage reporting features.
Download Fun offers a content delivery value chain that will benefit CSPs,
content providers and subscribers. Download Fun is part of Openwave's suite of
M-Services compliant products, which includes gateway and provisioning
infrastructure, client software, download platforms, and messaging services.
