Canada Post and Gemplus Announce Strategic Partnership for Electronic Postmark(TM) Services

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RSA Data Security 2002
-- Canada Post and Gemplus (Nasdaq: GEMP) today announced their partnership to
deliver and market enhanced Canada Post Electronic Postmark (EPM(TM))
services, essential for the secure, non-repudiable(i) delivery of on-line
documents and transactions.
"This relationship will expand our Electronic Postmark services which are
already an important part of our existing eServices platform," said Philippe
Lemay, executive vice-president, Business Development at Canada Post. "The
Electronic Postmark builds on the trust Canadians have long placed in the
security of the post and our `traditional' postmark. As more and more
transactions are taking place on the Internet, the corporation has been
working, as a trusted third party, to develop new Internet-based services
which will provide Canadians with that same level of security they have come
to expect from Canada Post."
Canada Post is currently providing secure electronic solutions through
PosteCS(TM), secure online bill presentment and payment through epost(TM), and
is working as a part of a consortium of companies to build the federal
government's secure channel. It also offers other electronic solutions such as
Volume Electronic Mail(TM) (VEM) and Sell Online(TM) Shipping module.
"Our partnership will offer Canada Post's customers a compelling
alternative to pen and paper transactions, realizing the practical advantages
of secure Internet communications," said David Ludin, North American senior
director of financial and security, Services Business Unit, Gemplus. "Canada
Post's Electronic Postmark (EPM(TM)) project is one of our largest eServices
opportunities to date, making it an exciting opportunity for Gemplus, and one
that yet again marks our position as a leading solutions provider in the
security space."
The EPM(TM), already a major component of the Canada Post e-platform as
well as one of the key offerings to the government secure channel consortium,
will be further enhanced. The EPM(TM) is Canada Post's testimonial seal, or
electronic signature, indicating that a customer's transaction was processed
and delivered securely and privately, and is non-repudiable, in accordance
with the service offering that the customer subscribed to.
"Partnering with Gemplus, the world leader in security and smart card
technology, will continue to enhance our role as an innovative e-commerce
business while allowing the corporation to play a vital role as the trusted
third party on the Internet," said Lemay.
Together, Gemplus and Canada Post will strengthen the non-repudiation
element of EPM(TM) by using GemSAFE server software that will manage
verification, time stamping and logging of all performed digital signature
operations, as well as client software for high-level transactions.
