Senior Telecom Consultant Leads Mobile Lifestyle Discussion at 3GSM World
Congress in Cannes
CANNES, France, Feb. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The "mobile lifestyle"
enabled by wireless communications, which has already had unexpected effects
on social status, security, and capital investment, will evolve more rapidly,
and with even greater impact, as companies apply more disciplined approaches
to developing mobile applications, predicted Javier Rubio of DiamondCluster
International (Nasdaq: DTPI), the global consulting firm.
Rubio, president of DiamondCluster's Europe and Latin America operations,
has been a senior advisor to a variety of Fortune 500 telecom companies on
issues ranging from mobile, satellite, and fixed network to CATV. As a
conference chair at this week's 3GSM World Congress 2002 in Cannes, Rubio led
a discussion of the mobile lifestyle that also featured Hiroshi Nakamura,
President Director General, DoCoMo Europe S.A., Erica Dubach, a specialist in
wireless business applications at IBM, and Emmanuel Grandserre, telematic
business manager of auto manufacturer, Citroen.
Rubio explained that DiamondCluster advises clients to consider mobile
applications in a framework comprised of three core principles:
-- Think in new dimensions,
-- Establish the right connections,
-- Find the right device.
New Dimensions
First, managers must think in new dimensions. Time and presence are the
crucial factors. When do customers need information? Is the device or
application available at a time and location when it is important? They must
also consider where the users will be located; for example the sub-basement of
a construction site, a rural road, and a congested urban area each carry their
own set of requirements and constraints. Thinking in new dimensions also
means considering the value of enabling communities of interest, allowing
groups of users to interact on demand.
Right Connections
The second principle is about establishing the right connections. For
example, knowing precisely about a customer's mobile lifestyle helps determine
whether they need persistent wireless connections such as a web-enabled phone
or if a personal digital assistant with "hot-synch" capability is more
appropriate.
Right Device
The third principle centers on the device itself. A variety of factors
come into play here, according to Rubio, including weight and size,
environment, battery life, storage capacity, data entry, and customization.
Simplicity is also an essential characteristic of the device. It should be
easier to use than current systems or processes and take no more than a few
minutes to learn. It should also be simple to exchange data, say between the
mobile device and a PC.
"There is no one mobile lifestyle; one size does not fit all," said Rubio.
"The best way to prosper from the evolution and expansion of mobile lifestyles
is to have an approach that thinks along new dimensions, establishes the right
connections, and incorporates the appropriate device.
"Companies like DoCoMo, Citroen and IBM understand the value of this kind
of disciplined approach and are, I believe, in a powerful position," Rubio
added. "It will be fascinating to witness the process they go through in
introducing new technologies and in serving customers in new ways."
