Service Helps Customers Migrate From Legacy Environments
To Enhance Security and Productivity
POWAY, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As major operating system
(OS) vendors discontinue support for their legacy products, Gateway, Inc. is
making sure its business customers aren't left with legacy problems of
their own.

That's why Gateway today launches Gateway OS Migration Services, the first
major offering under Gateway's new Professional Services suite (see separate
press release). With several options -- including UNIX-to-Linux migration and
Microsoft OS upgrades -- Gateway OS Migration Services benefit customers by
helping them increase network security with the latest OS versions and
patches. In addition, the services help simplify systems administration by
eliminating the need for multiple OSs and reduce costs by standardizing and
consolidating servers.
"From Microsoft's discontinued support of Windows NT to Red Hat's
elimination of its retail line, 2004 is turning out to be the 'year of
migration' for businesses of all sizes," said Scott Weinbrandt, senior vice
president of Gateway's Enterprise Systems Division. "Gateway's OS Migration
Services were designed to help customers plan and facilitate migration paths
to new or improved operating systems -- all at a minimal disruption to day-to-
day business activities."
Tailored for enterprises, small- and medium-sized businesses, government
agencies and educational institutions, Gateway OS Migration Services leverage
more than 5,000 highly trained OS migration experts nationwide. In addition,
each of the services is delivered using standardized best-practices
methodologies -- even when applied to complex, heterogeneous environments.
Gateway's OS Migration Services includes four major components:
* Windows Server Migration -- This service helps companies migrate their
network OSs from Novell, Windows NT, OS/2 or UNIX to Windows 2000 or
Windows Server 2003. Gateway migrates user accounts, rights and
privileges, and includes TCP/IP services, remote configuration of
workstations and consolidation of file servers.
* SUSE Linux Migration -- This service helps customers migrate their
network OSs from Novell, Windows NT, OS/2 or UNIX to SUSE Linux
Standard 8 or SUSE Linux Enterprise 8. Gateway migrates user
accounts, rights and privileges, and can also migrate TCP/IP
infrastructure, Windows file/print and HTTP web serving. If
applicable, Gateway can also consolidate file/print and web servers
and migrate data and applications. As part of this service, Gateway
also offers one year of free SUSE maintenance and upgrades with every
server.
* Microsoft Windows Exchange Migration -- This service helps customers
migrate the client's email system from previous versions of Microsoft
Exchange (such as 5.5), Lotus notes, Novell GroupWise or others to
Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003. Gateway migrates user accounts to a new
Exchange email store and covers email addresses, calendars, address
books, personal folders, Internet email access and connections to
legacy email systems.
* Microsoft Windows Workstation Migration -- This service helps
companies migrate from Windows NT 4.0, Windows 9x and OS/2 to
Windows XP with minimal disruption, resulting in a more secure
and user-friendly workstation environment. Gateway reformats and
re-images workstations, migrates workstation data and certain user
settings, and can also install specialized applications for the
customer.
Customers who purchase Gateway OS Migration Services are led through a
three-phased process of assessment, design and implementation. When finished,
customers reap benefits beyond improvements in OS security and administration,
such as greater end-user satisfaction due to increased network uptime and a
more streamlined network capable of handling future expansion.
While Gateway OS Migration Services is the first product under the new
Gateway Professional Services suite, the portfolio soon will include a variety
of branded services designed to tackle business customers' most pressing IT
needs, including clustering, network assessment and design, storage, security
consulting, and business continuity services. Gateway Professional Services
is a key component of Gateway's broader Technology LifeCycle Services
platform, which provides businesses with hardware, support and related
services they need through all stages of their technology's lifespan. For
