Wi-Fi Innovators Team to Help Companies Protect Against Wireless Promiscuity

Aruba Wireless Networks and Zone Labs Collaborate on Wireless Remediation

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Conference And Exhibition --
Aruba Wireless Networks(TM) (Aruba) and Zone Labs(R) Inc. today announced a
groundbreaking 802.1X wireless remediation solution. With this solution,
companies can now proactively protect against destructive viruses, worms and
trojans contracted at unsecure wireless environments.
For a limited time, Aruba will bundle a 30-day trial copy of Zone Labs
Integrity(TM) with its Wi-Fi switches to provide a turnkey wireless
remediation solution to its customers.
The collaborative work brings together, for the first time, three key
pieces of wireless security technology into a powerful turnkey system:
centrally managed endpoint security from Zone Labs, user aware network
firewalling and Wi-Fi switching from Aruba. With this solution, enterprises
now have a common framework that extends wireless security to address client
and host integrity.
Zone Labs Integrity, which is used by more than 1,100 enterprises,
protects networks from security vulnerabilities, malicious code and targeted
attacks by using a 'proactive security' approach rather than the traditional,
reactive methods dependent on anti-virus updates and software patches.
Integrity's standards-based combination of robust, multi-layered client
protective mechanisms and centrally managed security policy enforcement
prevents threats from penetrating the network, thus halting propagation and
further damage.

    How Wireless Remediation Works
Enterprise laptop users connecting outside protected corporate
environments, such as public hotspots, are subject to contracting potentially
destructive viruses and worms that can then be transmitted to other users when
connecting to the corporate network via wired or wireless access. Wireless
remediation automatically solves this problem by requiring users to have
"clean" systems prior to getting network access.
With the Aruba/Zone Labs 802.1X-compliant wireless remediation solution,
pre-defined security policies, such as up-to-date anti-virus software or
specific operating systems versions, are defined using the Zone Lab Integrity
policy engine. Aruba's Wi-Fi switching system then enforces wireless security
and user aware network-based firewalling policies to protect viruses and worms
from replicating.
When a mobile user enters the network, the 802.1X authentication is
initiated by Aruba. Once a user is authenticated, Zone Labs applies the
remediation policies that have been defined within Integrity. If a user
passes these security checks, Zone Labs Integrity server notifies Aruba's Wi-
Fi switch.
The Aruba Wi-Fi switch uses this information to place the user into the
correct user group in order to provide specific mobile network firewall
policies. Aruba's stateful firewall then enforces network access for the
entire system on a per user or per user group basis. If a station is not
compliant, the user can either be denied access, quarantined into a user group
that has restricted access privileges or redirected to a URL for remediation.
"Mobility requires rethinking network security from a user perspective,"
said Paul Weinstein, vice president of Strategic Alliances, Zone Labs, Inc.
"In addition to user authentication, companies must also verify the security
state of the connecting PC to enforce corporate security policies and prevent
the spread of malicious programs."
"We've taken defense in-depth for wireless networks by giving companies
the power to actively enforce security policies using existing AAA mechanisms
within a standard 802.1X framework," said Keerti Melkote, co-founder and vice
president of Marketing at Aruba Wireless Networks. "Together with Zone Labs we
are delivering a turnkey solution for client integrity over wireless networks
that, until now, hasn't been easily deployable."

    Interoperability Configuration and Details
The testing was conducted using Zone Labs Integrity 4.5 and Aruba's Wi-Fi
switches and 802.11a+b/g access points.
Station security policies were centrally defined using Integrity running
on a Windows XP Professional server and connected via 10/100 Mbps link to
Aruba's 5000 wireless LAN switching system, which acted as the 802.1X
authenticator.
Stations associated to Aruba 802.11 access points that were directly
connected to an Aruba 5000 WLAN switch running Aruba's AirOS 2.0. Funk
Software's Steel-Belted Radius software v.4.5x functioned as the 802.1X
authentication server. Microsoft's Protected Extensible Authentication
Protocol (PEAP) was used between devices.
Once wireless clients associated to the Aruba wireless LAN were
authenticated, they were subjected to a battery of security tests by Integrity
to ensure they were in compliance with security policy. Based on the outcome,
Aruba's Wireless LAN switch enforced network access policies via its stateful
firewall.
