Pioneer in Evidence-Based Medicine Releases New Research-Use-Only Assays to
Enable Detection of Proteins Implicated in Alzheimer's Disease
DEDHAM, Mass., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Signet Laboratories, Inc., a
pioneer in evidence-based medicine (EviMed), today announced the availability
of three important new monoclonal antibodies used for the identification and
measurement of the 40, 42, and 43 amino acid isoforms of Beta Amyloid.
Cerebrovascular deposition of beta-amyloid protein is a common pathologic
event in Alzheimer's Disease and certain related neurodegenerative disorders.
Identifying the proportions of the 40, 42, and 43 isoforms of Beta Amyloid in
normal and Alzheimer's Disease brain tissue is a continuing challenge for
researchers.
Alzheimer's is a disease that presently affects over 4 million people, a
number that is expected to quadruple over the next 15 years. There is no
known cure and diagnosis can only be confirmed post-mortem. "There is
compelling evidence that the c-terminal cleavage point of beta amyloid
determines the aggregation potential of the peptide," said Joe Bertelsen,
Neuroscience Product Manager for Signet Laboratories.
He added, "Signet's three new monoclonal antibodies to Beta Amyloid 40,
42, and 43, offer researchers highly effective tools for investigating the
diagnostic and therapeutic value of these three isoforms."

Signet Laboratories, Inc. is a pioneering evidence-based medicine (EviMed)
company that is committed to developing and commercializing predictive
diagnostics and preventive drugs and therapies for critical disease states.
Evidence-based medicine is the treatment of diseases prior to their full
manifestation, with the goal of reducing their occurrence and preventing
disease progression by early identification of patients with increased risk
factors.
Drawing on long experience in developing diagnostic assays and antibodies
for disease detection and treatment, Signet's mission is to create novel
diagnostics and drugs for patients at risk for cancer, sepsis and renal
failure (SARF), neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's
and Huntington's, and prion diseases such as "Mad Cow" and vCJD.
In addition to diagnostics, drugs and therapies, Signet offers a complete
product line of over 400 manufactured antibodies, ELISA kits, detection
products and accessories in an FDA registered facility. Signet products are
