MELROSE PARK, Ill., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Aiding diabetics to live
healthier lives, Chicagoland's leading food-and-drug combination retailer is
sponsoring a series of informative seminars to assist those with the disease.
Hosted by Jewel-Osco, diabetes care program seminars provide basic
education and instruction to help those afflicted with the disease manage the
illness and avoid life-threatening complications.
Seminar topics include an overview of diabetes, proper nutrition and
exercise, diabetes treatment, and preventing complications. (Please see list
for seminar dates and store locations). Each seminar in the four-part series
costs $30. However, diabetes patients purchasing a box of 50 or 100
Accu-Check Advantage brand test strips at Osco Drug may attend all four
seminars at no charge, and receive a selected blood-glucose monitor valued at
$60.
Diabetes patients attending the seminars will receive a wide-variety of
informative take-home materials to supplement seminar topics, and select
locations can offer the seminars in Spanish. Patients needing more extensive
care-training can be referred for private consultations on issues including:
blood-glucose monitoring, insulin delivery, oral diabetes medications,
hypoglycemia, and sick-day therapy.
Jewel-Osco President, Greg Josefowicz, said people with diabetes can count
on the Melrose Park-based retailer's dedicated pharmacists to take an active,
personal role in their care.
"Proper, effective management of diabetes requires a team effort, and a
trusted knowledgeable pharmacist is an integral member of the team,"
Josefowicz said. "Osco pharmacists receive specialized training and
continuing education that makes them uniquely qualified to tackle diabetes'
special challenges."
An estimated 10-million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, which left
untreated can result in devastating health problems including kidney failure,
eye disease, limb amputations, and coronary failure, according to the US
Center for Disease Control.
Jewel-Osco Vice President of Pharmacy Operations, Gerry Bay, said each
time a person with diabetes visits Jewel-Osco they can rely on people who care
to answer questions and fill special requests to help them treat diabetes.

For convenience, diabetes care pharmacies carry a large selection of
over-the-counter diabetic products and supplies located in a single area of
the pharmacy.
