The USNS Mercy is serving as an enabling platform to assist humanitarian
operations both aboard and ashore in ways that host nations and international
relief organization find useful. Mercy is currently off the waters of
Indonesia in support of Operation Unified Assistance. Through the
private/public partnership with the U.S. Navy, more than 1,300 tsunami
survivors have received medical care. The Dec. 26 disaster left tens of
thousands of people without access to basic medical care and medical supplies
and destroyed much of the region's infrastructure.
Project HOPE has also deployed its own staff as well as extensive
resources to the tsunami relief effort. More than $9 million in humanitarian
aid destined to provide tsunami survivors with critical medicines is being
delivered in the Banda Aceh region of Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka. The
aid is targeted to hospitals, clinics and emergency centers.
Project HOPE began in 1958 with the first peacetime hospital ship, the SS
HOPE, donated by President Eisenhower. Its maiden voyage was to Indonesia.
Today, Project HOPE conducts land-based medical training and health education
programs in 34 countries across five continents. For more information about
