AT&T Wireless Posts Big Numbers for Olympic Performance

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- While the U.S. Olympic team was
busy winning a mountain of medals at this year's Games,
AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) was establishing records of its own.
"AT&T Wireless posted big numbers at the Olympics in what we did and how
we did it," said Greg Slemons, the company's executive vice president for
network operations. "Specifically, we handled a record number of calls and
did so at near-perfect levels."
Between Feb. 8 and Feb. 24, the AT&T Wireless network handled 9.6 million
calls from the venues where the athletes competed, averaging more than 500,000
calls daily. The number of calls made during the Games was nearly three times
more than the same period last year and represented nearly 25 percent of the
39 million calls the company handled for the entire Salt Lake City market.
In the three key measures of how its network performed during the
Olympics-placing and receiving calls, not dropping or disconnecting calls, and
clear sound, the company scored above 96 percent. The measure "not dropping
or disconnecting calls" was especially strong, scoring above 99 percent.
"The people of AT&T Wireless did not win medals for ski jumping, speed
skating, or bobsledding, but their hard work helped these and other exciting
Olympic events come to life for millions of our customers," Slemons said. "If
they were to judge us, I believe we would have won medals based on technical
merit and network performance.
