PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel
Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced a number of management changes at its
Gary Works facilities in Northwest Indiana. Frederick G. Jauss has been
named general manager-Gary Works; Ralph Corrente has been named plant
manager- primary operations; and David L. Armstrong has been named plant
manager- Midwest Plant. The changes are effective March 1.
Jauss, 58, and native of Trenton, N.J., replaces Michael S. Williams,
who was named vice president-operations, Midwest. Jauss will report to
Williams under the new organizational structure the company announced
earlier today. Jauss will have responsibility for steelmaking and finishing
operations in Gary, Ind., tin production at the East Chicago Tin Plant in
East Chicago, Ind., and finishing operations at the Midwest Plant in
Portage, Ind. Gary Works is the largest integrated steelmaking facility in
the United States and has an annual raw steelmaking capability of 7.5
million net tons.
Jauss began his U. S. Steel career at the company's Fairless Works near
Philadelphia in 1968 as a student co-op in the metallurgy department and
served in that position until his graduation from Drexel University in 1972
with a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering. After graduating, he
joined U. S. Steel as a management trainee in Fairless' sheet and tin
metallurgy department. From 1972 to 1983, he was promoted through a series
of supervisory roles in the plant's tin mill quality control, metallurgy,
and quality assurance departments before transferring to Gary Works, where
he spent eight years advancing through the positions of quality assurance
manager-hot rolling, area manager-hot rolling, and manager-hot rolling and
sheet and tin quality assurance.
In 1991, Jauss moved to Fairfield Works in Fairfield, Ala., to serve as
manager of quality assurance. He was named general manager of research at
Pittsburgh headquarters in 1996, general manager of sheet technology in
1999, and managing director of technology in 2002. In 2003, Jauss returned
to Gary Works to serve as plant manager-finishing operations. Two years
later, he was appointed to his most recent position, general manager-Great
Lakes Works, where he oversaw steelmaking and finishing operations at the
company's Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich., facility.
Jauss and his wife, Nancy, will relocate to Northwest Indiana.
Corrente, 46, replaces Sharon K. Owen, who was named general manager-
Granite City Works in Granite City, Ill. He will report to Jauss.
Corrente held a number of increasingly responsible positions at Stelco,
GST Steel and AK Steel from 1988 through 2003 before joining U. S. Steel as
deputy general manager-primary operations at U. S. Steel Kosice in the
Slovak Republic. One year later, he was promoted to general manager-primary
operations at the facility. In 2005, Corrente was named plant
manager-primary operations at Great Lakes Works. He advanced to his most
recent post, general manager-blast furnace engineering & technology, in May
2006 and was responsible for the operation, maintenance and technological
development of the company's blast furnaces around the world.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Corrente graduated in 1985 from the
University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, with a bachelor's degree in
metallurgy. He and his wife, Maria, and their two sons will live in
Northwest Indiana.
Armstrong, 54, replaces Thomas Kelly, who will assume Corrente's
previous position of general manager-blast furnace engineering &
technology. Armstrong will also report to Jauss.
A native of Fairless Hills, Pa., where his father worked for U. S.
Steel, Armstrong began his career in the steel industry in 1972 as an
hourly employee at National Steel's Midwest Plant. He moved into management
in 1982 and held a series of increasingly responsible positions. In 1996,
Armstrong was appointed division manager-operations, holding various
positions in both the sheet and tin divisions.
When U. S. Steel acquired the Midwest Plant along with other National
Steel operations in 2003, Armstrong was advanced to division
manager-Midwest Tin. He was named division manager-Gary and East Chicago
Tin in 2004. He was appointed to his most recent position,
president-ProCoil Company LLC, in July 2007. ProCoil
Company is a wholly owned steel processing subsidiary of U. S. Steel
located in Canton, Mich.
Armstrong and his wife, Sandy, will reside in Northwest Indiana.
