PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eight Portland-area
nonprofit organizations received grant awards today totaling $101,595 from
The Fred Meyer Foundation at a ceremony this morning at the Fred Meyer Main
Office in Portland.
Sam Duncan, president of Fred Meyer Stores and The Fred Meyer Foundation,
presented the checks to representatives of the eight local organizations,
which include: Ethos, Inc.; Oregon Children's Theatre; Sisters of the Road
Cafe; Western Youth Development; Boys & Girls Clubs of the Portland
Metropolitan Area; The Library Foundation; Portland Impact; and the YWCA of
Greater Portland. The money comes from The Fred Meyer Foundation endowment
in response to grant requests from each organization for dedicated projects.
"The Fred Meyer Foundation was particularly impressed by the successful
track record of these organizations and their programs," Duncan said. "We
know they will put these grants to good use in the important work they are
doing to enrich our community."
Mary Loftin, corporate director of community relations for Fred Meyer and
director of The Fred Meyer Foundation, said, "We are proud to be part of the
Portland community and to help where we can. Social responsibility is a
company priority established by our founder, Fred G. Meyer, that continues to
be an integral part of the Fred Meyer commitment to the communities we serve.
Mr. Meyer stated, 'To be a good neighbor, you must strive to be a good
neighbor in all ways.' Financial support of nonprofit organizations is just
one of the many ways we uphold this tradition."
Ten Seattle organizations received grants earlier this month from The Fred
Meyer Foundation totaling $69,360 at a ceremony inside the Ballard Fred Meyer
store. All together in the final fiscal quarter of 2001 (for the year ending
February 2, 2002), The Fred Meyer Foundation donated a total of $287,955 to
24 deserving organizations in Alaska, Utah, Oregon, and Washington.
The Fred Meyer Foundation assists nonprofit organizations dedicated to
