iPlanet(TM) to be Marketed as Sun's Preferred E-Commerce Solution
PALO ALTO, Calif. and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 29 /PRNewswire/ --
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and iPlanet(TM) E-Commerce Solutions, a
Sun Netscape Alliance, today announced that they plan to increase investments
in sales, marketing and technical support resources to accelerate Sun's and
iPlanet's penetration of the global e-commerce markets.
In particular, Sun and iPlanet are planning to expand coverage in the Asia
Pacific and European regions where an increasing number of large e-commerce
opportunities have emerged in the last 12 months. Further, Sun plans to
develop additional technical support expertise in its .com competency centers.
The expertise developed in these centers is designed to provide technical
advice and support to customer projects and bid proposals. These resources
are intended to assist with application tuning, performance improvements, and
real world simulations of iPlanet products on the Solaris(TM) Operating
Environment.
Additionally, Sun and iPlanet plan to define aggressive programs to
leverage Sun's worldwide channel partners. Sun's channel partners have the
ability to penetrate markets unreachable by either Sun's or iPlanet's direct
sales organizations.
"The expansion of our joint marketing, sales and support activities is the
next step in expanding a successful relationship," said Reed Hornberger,
senior director Market Development for Sun Microsystems. "Over the past
several months, Sun and iPlanet engineers have worked to deliver superior
e-commerce solutions by fine tuning iPlanet products for the Solaris
environment. It is now time to move to the next level. As Sun's preferred
e-commerce solution, iPlanet offers customers a powerful solution based on a
shared heritage, vision and understanding of the requirements needed to
succeed in the Net Economy."
"The time is right for Sun to capitalize on iPlanet's breadth of product
and number one market positions in messaging, directory, web, and application
server software," said Marge Breya, chief marketing officer for iPlanet
E-Commerce Solutions. "Together Sun and iPlanet are ready to unleash the full
potential created by the union of Sun's outstanding hardware and support
services with the unrivaled acceptance of iPlanet's broad software solutions.
The foundation is now in place and it is time to aggressively go to market
with Sun, our highest volume hardware platform."
