U.S. Marines Use Harris Corporation Secure Wireless Network Technology for Tsunami Relief Efforts

MELBOURNE, Fla., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation
(NYSE: HRS) today announced that the U.S. Marine Corps is using its secure
wireless local area network (SWLAN) products for tsunami relief efforts in
South Asia. The products will be used by the Marines that are part of the
Combined Support Force 536 (CSF-536) in U'tapao, Thailand. CSF-536 is
currently assisting the people of Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia in their
recovery from the devastating December 2004 tsunamis. The Harris SecNet 11(R)
Plus PC Card, designed for secure wireless data, video and voice over IP
(VoIP) transmission, will enhance the safety of Marines by enabling secure
communication networks within the Marines' Command and Control headquarters.
"SecNet 11 was chosen because it is the only NSA-approved application that
could readily meet the needs of the Marine Corps," said Master Gunnery
Sergeant Mark Clemmons, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan. "With
this system, we are able to move into a location, set up and program, apply
the needed COMSEC fills up to the Secret level, and be up and running in a
fraction of the time it would take to set up Secure Internet Protocol Routing
in a wired network environment and get it accredited to military standards.
We also now have the benefit of configuring large command centers with
flexibility and security without requiring miles of wires."
Under the terms of the contract, Harris is supplying 160 SecNet 11 Plus PC
cards, 10 SecNet Wireless Bridges, key fill cables, spares, carrying cases and
mounting brackets. The equipment will provide secure control over the entire
Concept of Operations, from command and control to the logistical, integration
and intelligence apparatus.
"We are very pleased that the Marines have selected Harris to provide the
high levels of security, mobility and flexibility that they require for this
operation," said Russ Haney, president of the National Programs business unit
of Harris Corporation's Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD).
"SecNet 11 is providing secure and non-secure command and control over the
extended CSF-536 network, covering the entire compound and more than 200 users
within an extremely dynamic environment."
SecNet 11 Plus is the centerpiece of a family of SecNet 11 products that
offers everything needed to support a SWLAN infrastructure for a wide range of
command and control operational scenarios. The Harris SecNet 11 Plus PC Card
is the only NSA-certified, 802.11b wireless Network Interface Card employing
Type 1 cryptography that is capable of delivering secure data, video, and VoIP
at the Secret level at a data rate of 11 Megabits-per-second. Its Type 1
encryption capability secures the entire IEEE 802.11b packet, which provides
secure communication of data and network header information (COMSEC and
NETSEC) for all network layers.
"While SecNet 11 has been used in Iraq and Afghanistan, this is the first
time that we know of that the system has been deployed on a scale of this
magnitude within the Marine Corps," added Clemmons.
Incorporating the Harris Sierra(R) Encryption Module, SecNet 11 Plus
enables government agencies to use commercial, state-of-the-art wireless LAN
technology in a secure environment. By embedding the cryptographic circuitry
into the SecNet 11 Plus PC Card, the need for costly, externally wired
encryption equipment is completely eliminated, thereby enabling users to
quickly assemble a network and maintain wireless communications-on-the-move,
anywhere in the world.

Harris GCSD, one of four divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts
advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces and supports
state-of-the-art, assured communications(TM) solutions and information systems
that solve the mission-critical challenges of its military and government
customers, while serving as the technology base for the company's diverse
commercial businesses. Harris Corporation, which also provides tactical radio,
microwave, and broadcast products and systems, serves customers in more than
150 countries. For more information, visit http://www.harris.com .
