In a spectacular celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of its flagship
product Aspirin(R), Bayer is dressing up its 32-story headquarters building in
Leverkusen, Germany as a huge Aspirin box.
More than 20,000 spectators are expected to watch on March 6 as climbers
rappel down the building, connecting strips of fabric to form the package.
Observers from the Guinness Book of World Records will be on hand.
The entire operation will be carried live on video on the internet
(http://www.bayer.com/aspirin-live/) in a transmission beginning at 4 a.m. EST on
March 6 and lasting approximately 12 hours.
Bayer chemist Dr. Felix Hoffmann synthesized acetylsalicylic acid in a
chemically pure and stable form in 1897. It was given the name Aspirin and
entered in the register of the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin on March 6,
1899. Today Aspirin, whose properties are now recognized as going far beyond
reducing pain, is a registered trademark of Bayer AG in more than 90 countries
worldwide.
