NEW YORK, NY USA
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens VDO
Automotive has won the 2003 Automotive News/Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Premier
Automotive Suppliers' Contributions to Excellence (PACE) Award for its Piezo
Common Rail Diesel Direct Injection System featured in Peugeot and Citroen
European diesel passenger cars.

The honor was presented to Siemens VDO Automotive Powertrain Chief
Executive Officer Johann Warga, during an elegant ceremony held at the Detroit
Opera House on March 2 in conjunction with the 2003 SAE World Congress.
"Winning the PACE award is a proud achievement for Siemens VDO
Automotive," said Warga. "Piezo actuation applied in a common rail diesel
injection system allows for a level of speed and precision never before
achieved in a fuel injection system."
The Siemens VDO Automotive system raised the bar in the European passenger
car diesel market, in terms of achieving improved emissions and NVH
performance characteristics.
This Siemens VDO Automotive innovation is the automotive industry's first
Piezo Common Rail Diesel Direct Injection System, which will lead to
significant improvements in diesel engine exhaust emissions, significantly
reduced noise levels and improved fuel economy without sacrificing performance
in new generation diesels.
The innovation is based on the development of piezoelectronic actuators,
which are switching elements utilizing the specific behavior of piezoelectric
crystals. When an electric charge is applied to such a crystal, the crystal
lattice changes instantly and expands. Siemens VDO Automotive uses this
unique property to control fuel flow in the fuel injectors.
In addition, the company's instrument cluster featured on the 2003
Mercedes-Benz E Class and CLK-Class was an Honorable Mention at this year's
PACE Awards. One of the world's most advanced driver information display
systems, it is designed to display a wide array of information in a user-
friendly manner, provide interior designers more freedom, allow for high-
quality material selection to enhance the vehicle's design cues and require
less space than conventional instrument clusters.
Since 1994, the PACE Awards program has been honoring the Premier
Automotive Suppliers' Contributions to Excellence. Awards are given to
automotive industry suppliers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who
embrace innovation by providing materials and products or services to the
automobile manufacturers of cars and trucks.
Siemens VDO Automotive is a tier-one supplier of automotive
electronic/electrical systems and components with applications covering
gasoline and diesel powertrain technologies, safety and chassis systems, body
electronics, plus interior products including infotainment systems. Worldwide
sales reflecting fiscal year 2001/2002 totaled $8.5 billion. For more
