Special GameSpot Feature Previews All IGF Finalists
SAN FRANCISCO, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Independent Games Festival
(IGF) and GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com), the leading gaming information Web
site, have announced that the sixth annual IGF competition's finalist games
are available for high speed download at no charge at dlx.gamespot.com and are
being showcased on GameSpot in a new feature story, "Spotlight on the
Independent Games Festival," located at
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6090171/index.html. The feature will be
updated later this month to acknowledge the winners of the competition.
The IGF was established in 1998 by the CMP Game Group to encourage
innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game
developers, the way the Sundance Film Festival has benefited the independent
film community. By reaching millions of gamers, this important exposure on
GameSpot helps the IGF finalists move beyond the game developer show floor,
and into the mainstream of the games market.
"The IGF has been at the forefront of supporting innovation in games. This
vision is core to GameSpot as well," said Greg Kasavin, Executive Editor,
GameSpot. "In evaluating these games, we've found a number that have great
potential, and we're happy to share them with our audience."
In its sixth year, the IGF received more than 111 original entries
representing 18 countries. A panel of 51 narrowed down the field to the
20 most innovative independent game projects worldwide. Finalists are split in
two separate categories: "Web/Downloadable Games" and an "Open" category for
all other games. Games in each category will be eligible for six awards:
Innovation In Audio, Innovation In Game Design, Innovation In Visual Arts,
Technical Excellence, The Audience Award and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize
for Independent Game of the Year, for a total of $40,000 in cash awards --
double the payout from previous years. The festival culminates at the annual
Game Developers Conference, March 22-26, 2004 in San Jose, Calif., where
finalists demonstrate their games to the game industry and press. Winners will
be announced at the IGF awards ceremony on March 24, 2004. For more
