DEERFIELD, Ill., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- John F. Rowley, executive vice
president, Tissue & Towel Operations and Logistics for Fort James Corporation
(NYSE: FJ), has announced his decision to retire from the company effective
March 12.

Rowley assumed his current position in 1997 in connection with the merger
of Fort Howard Corporation and James River Corporation. He had served as
Executive Vice President, Operations, for Fort Howard since 1988. He joined
Fort Howard in 1984.
"My career at Fort James was marked by unique challenges and
opportunities," Rowley said. "While this was a difficult decision to reach, I
am looking forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing other
interests."

role in creating and organizing Fort James' Tissue and Towel operations," said

Assuming the title of President, North American Tissue & Towel Operations
and Logistics, is B. Gregory Stroh. Stroh joined Fort James in 1997 as
President of the Packaging Business. Prior to joining Fort James Stroh served
as President and Chief Executive Officer of Custom Industries. From 1992 to
1995 he served as Executive Vice President, Operations and Technology, for
Pet, Inc. He has held various executive and operating management positions
with Kraft, Inc., for more than 22 years.
Until a permanent replacement is named, Stroh will maintain temporary
responsibility for the company's Packaging Business.
