Leading automotive supplier emerging as
developer, integrator of in-vehicle telematics
PLYMOUTH, Mich., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), a
leading global automotive interior supplier, will present a vision for the
future of consumer-centered telematics at the 2002 Digital Car Conference and
Exhibition, entitled, "Telematics: What Do People Really Want?" Drawing on the
company's position as one of the automotive industry's leading interior
systems integrators, coupled with its unique ability to both incubate and
launch innovative in-vehicle technologies, Johnson Controls is positioned to
offer telematics systems that can be tailored to the evolving needs of
consumers. Johnson Controls will supply telematics products to several
automakers for future vehicle models. This key differentiation, according to
company officials, is pivotal in the continued evolution of the telematics
industry.
"Many current telematics solutions and services are not vehicle-centric,
which is problematic," said Jim Geschke, vice president and general manager of
electronics integration for Johnson Controls, and a featured speaker at the
Digital Car Conference. "Mobility and open architecture are keys to the
continued development of this industry. Based on the short life cycles of
consumer electronics, in-vehicle telematics systems must be highly flexible
and adaptable, or they risk obsolescence in the near and long-term future."
The Digital Car Conference (DCC), and its accompanying exhibition, to be
held from March 4-7, 2002 at Cobo Center in Detroit, is the first in the
Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) history to offer a fully interactive
program format. Speakers from the industry's key players in the telematics
field will develop their presentations covering automotive electronic issues
from multiple perspectives -- such as technology, business, marketing,
financial and more. The theme, "Telematics: What do people really want?"
reflects the consumer-focused approach to this inaugural conference on mobile
electronic features, such as navigation, entertainment and safety systems. SAE
has teamed with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) which will be
co-sponsoring this timely event and will provide the customer perspective to
leading-edge, industry views.
Geschke's presentation, "Consumer-driven Telematics," is scheduled for
Wednesday, March 6 at 11 a.m. In conjunction with the design of the Digital
Car Conference, attendees to his presentation will have the ability to provide
"real-time" feedback and questions, and he will then, in turn, tailor his
presentation to aspects of the industry the audience would most like to
discuss.
Johnson Controls' telematics strategy incorporates the flexibility
consumers require by minimizing obsolescence and maximizing the ability to
synchronize in-vehicle systems with rapid technology advances. These advances
are inherent in electronic devices, such as cell phones and personal digital
assistants.
