OSRAM Opto Presentations Outline Advantages of LEDs For Exterior Lighting at SAE Conference

Light Emitting Diodes Offer Styling Options, Longer Life,
Reduced Power Consumption and Provide Cost Savings for Automakers

NORTHVILLE, Mich., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- In the past two decades, light
emitting diodes (LEDs) have become an important part of vehicle interior
lighting. The development of ever-brighter LEDs now opens opportunities for
use in exterior lighting applications, from brake lights to turn indicators
and, in the future, headlamps.
LEDs offer superior mechanical stability and up to 100 times the life of
conventional incandescent lamps, and use less energy. Closely linked to the
longevity of LEDs is an increased level of road safety. The negligible risk
of total failure ensures that vital signals like turn and stoplights are
always properly functioning. It has also been investigated and proven that
response times of the driver to luminous signals is decreased by up to
250 milliseconds versus conventional light bulbs. In the case of stoplights,
this translates into a shortening of the braking distance by 6 meters at 100
km/h (or 60 mph). These attributes combine to make LED lighting applications
a flexible and cost-efficient option for automotive exterior lighting.
Engineers from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (OSRAM OS), a leading supplier of
LEDs, sensing and visualization solutions for the automotive market, will
present the newest developments in LED technology and applications at the
Society of Automotive Engineers Conference at Cobo Center in Detroit,
March 4-7, 2002. Brief descriptions of the presentations are below.

-- Power LEDs for Automotive Exterior Lighting
    Tuesday, March 5, 2002, 9:30 a.m. in Cobo Center Room D0-05 A&B
Presented by Georg Bogner, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH, Regensburg,
     Germany
By comparing high power LEDs like Golden Dragon(R) and conventional LEDs,
a team of OSRAM OS engineers has developed guidelines for determining the best
type of LEDs to use for possible exterior lighting designs. The presentation
also offers insight into the future use of LEDs in headlamp applications.

-- Subminiature Leadframe Based SMT LEDs and Total Internal Reflection
Optics (TIR) Enable Ultra Thin Automotive Lamps (8-12 mm)
    Tuesday, March 5, 2002, 11:00 a.m. in Cobo Center Room D0-05 A&B
Presented by Hubert Ott, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc., Northville,
     Michigan
Combining micro-miniature SmartLED(TM) packages and extremely high-
efficiency TIR optics to produce ultra-thin lamps can reduce total signal
lighting costs, lower power consumption and offer more flexible styling
options for automakers and Tier One suppliers.
