NEW YORK, NY USA
DETROIT, March 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens VDO Automotive is this
week presenting research findings of a pedestrian protection study exploring
contact sensor concepts designed to facilitate rapid pedestrian safety system
activation. This topic is among eight Siemens VDO Automotive technical
presentations being delivered during the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
World Congress being held March 3-6 at Cobo Center in Detroit.

As new European legislation will require car manufacturers to pass a
series of tests considered representative of a frontal impact between a
vehicle and a pedestrian, Siemens VDO Automotive will review various contact
sensor technologies able to detect and differentiate between different
impacts.
Siemens VDO Automotive presenters will discuss the demands for contact
sensor technology for use in active pedestrian protection systems, such as
profile detection, deformation velocity, contact surface and signal
evaluation. Presenters also will describe investigated contact sensor
technologies, such as the Force Sensing Resistor (FSR-Sensor), the Inductive
Contact Sensor (ICS) and the design of sensor prototypes in the bumper area
with regard to the energy absorption of the impact.
