MIAMI, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- DHL announced today its partnership with
the Economist Intelligence Unit to create an authoritative research report on
the business implications of the pending free trade agreements across North
and South America. The report, titled "Free Trade Prospects in the Americas:
Strategies for a Transformed Market", is slated to be released in May 2004.
Based on a global survey, a wide range of interviews with the region's
business leaders, the in-house expertise of the Economist Intelligence Unit
and input from companies like DHL, the report will define and discuss the
various issues businesses are likely to face as a result of the changing trade
and investment environment in the Americas. Among the areas the report will
focus on include:
-- FTAA lite -- how will the scaled-down FTAA proposal play out and what
are its prospects for a successful conclusion?
-- What impact will other trade agreements, such as CAFTA, have on
furthering or impeding economic liberalization trends in South America?
-- Will there be a deeper version of the Mercosur agreement, mirroring
the EU, that would consolidate the Mercosur region, stretch into the Andean
region and close off access to specific industry markets?
-- What would be the potential impact of an EU-Mercosur trade agreement
on the Americas?
"It is an honor for DHL to partner with such a prestigious organization as
the Economist Intelligence Unit to produce a comprehensive report that focuses
on this timely and important issue -- the future of free trade in the
Americas," said Rafael Couttolenc, senior vice president, DHL Express Latin
America. "As the leading express, transportation and logistics provider in
the region, DHL believes it is pertinent to open the Americas' markets to free
trade, allowing companies doing business in a region as diverse and complex as
ours to operate more effectively and efficiently. We look forward to the
publishing of the final report this spring."
"In order to address the looming questions companies doing business in the
region are currently facing, a report of this scope and nature was necessary,"
said Alex Banks, Latin America business development director for the Economist
Intelligence Unit. "Thanks to DHL's corporate involvement, we are able to
embark on this ambitious research that promises to illuminate the road ahead
for business leaders."
The upcoming white paper, which embraces the new political pragmatism in
today's free trade negotiations, is positioned to serve as a corporate guide
for business leaders across the region.
