Guy C. Hachey, vice president, Delphi Automotive Systems and president,
Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems, along with five fellow industry experts,
including moderator, David Cole, director, Center for Automotive Research,
discussed the merits of succeeding in the alliance game.
Speaking about the Delphi alliance strategy, Hachey told the panel, "The
key to a successful alliance centers on how we focus our energies around
integrating the organizations involved through establishing a clear purpose
and common understanding of the goals and objectives."
Hachey emphasized the importance of integration and discussed Delphi's
five-step integration model.
The first step is to appoint a full-time integration manager and establish
functional teams. The next key activity is the development and communication
of the vision for the alliance. The third key item is the development of the
100-day integration plan. Employee communication is the fourth critical
element. Carefully orchestrated communication programs contribute greatly to
the success of alliances. The final activity in the integration process is
the development of synergy achievement tracking mechanisms to help identify
barriers and promote accountability.
SAE 2001 Blue Ribbon panelists included: William Carol, president, Dana
Corporation; J. Ferron, PricewaterhouseCoopers; Rudolph A. Schlais, Jr., group
vice president, General Motors, president, General Motors Asia Pacific (PTE)
Ltd.; and R. Suresh, director, Embedded Systems Group, Microsoft Corporation.
