PENNDOT Secretary Promotes Motorists' Transportation Options; Visit Coincides With the Closing of the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel in 30 Days

PITTSBURGH, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- To promote public transportation and
traveling options available to Pittsburgh motorists during the closing of the
Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel, PENNDOT Secretary Brad Mallory today visited
Pittsburgh to meet with the Pittsburgh Parking Authority and the Port
Authority of Allegheny County.
"As the closing of the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel draws closer, motorists
need to know their commuting options," said Mallory. "By using the Port
Authority's public transportation system or knowing the planned alternate
routes from the numerous parking garages managed by the Pittsburgh Parking
Authority, motorists of southwestern Pennsylvania will successfully and safely
get to their destinations."
Mallory began his visit by turning on the 30-day countdown signs on the
overhead message boards that communicate road conditions along the Parkway
East and West. The message boards state, "30 days until the Fort Pitt Bridge
and Tunnel close ... visit epenndot.com or call 1-877-450-4279 for more
information." The countdown will continue until the closing of the Fort Pitt
Bridge and Tunnel on April 6, 2002.
Mallory also unveiled the first of many displayable alternate route maps
at the Pittsburgh Parking Authority's First Avenue Garage and the Port
Authority's First Avenue 'T' Station. The displayable alternate route map,
visible at numerous downtown buildings, details the three primary detour
routes and is downloadable at epenndot.com. This significant location allows
motorists the opportunity to park at the Parking Authority's newest garage,
the First Avenue Garage, and use the Port Authority's 'T' line to downtown
locations at no charge.
On hand with Mallory at the First Avenue 'T' Station was Paul Skoutelas,
executive director of the Port Authority of Allegheny County and Ralph Horgan,
executive director, Pittsburgh Parking Authority.
