FORT WORTH, Texas, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide Flight Services, the
world's leading independent aviation services provider, was selected to
provide traffic interchange services for MTR Corporation's Airport Express
Line in Hong Kong.
"This contract represents a major expansion in Worldwide's service to MTR,
and a significant opportunity for us in Hong Kong," said Mark Dunkerley,
president and COO of Worldwide Flight Services. Dunkerley added that Asia is
a key target area for future growth for Worldwide, as demands for
international air service continue to increase.
Under the contract, which began Feb. 1, Worldwide Flight Services will
manage vehicular traffic flow through Airport Express' three downtown
stations, as well as traffic and parking regulation enforcement, taxi dispatch
and emergency response. The Airport Express Line averages 30,000 users per
day.
Worldwide already provides baggage trolley management, baggage porterage
and customer assistance services for the Airport Express Line in Hong Kong.
With this contract Worldwide will increase its Hong Kong employee base to 200.
"Since its opening less than two years ago, the Airport Express has become
the most preferred mode of land transportation serving the new airport.
Worldwide Flight Services has done an excellent job in meeting our rapidly
increasing service demands, and we look forward to expanding this mutually
productive business relationship," said Joseph Chan, Operations Manager of MTR
Corporation.
Worldwide has operated at the Hong Kong airport since the airport's
opening in 1998. The company is one of only two firms providing into-plane
fueling at the airport and serves more than 40 airlines and oil companies.
MTR Corporation is a Hong Kong government-owned company, providing
commuter rail service throughout the territory. MTR operates the Airport
Express Line, the most customer-oriented transportation system in Hong Kong.
The system is a high-speed, dedicated rail service (one of the few of its kind
in the world) which links three stations in downtown Hong Kong with the new
airport at Chek Lap Kok. The all-business-class trains depart every
10 minutes. Stations in Central Hong Kong and Kowloon offer full airline
check-in service.
Worldwide Flight Services provides a wide range of services on behalf of
300 airlines, air carriers and airport authorities in 92 locations around the
world. These include cargo, passenger and ramp handling services, as well as
technical assistance such as passenger boarding bridge maintenance, fueling
and management services.
Worldwide Flight Services was acquired on March 31, 1999 by a private
equity investment fund managed by Castle Harlan, Inc., a New York-based
merchant bank. In August 1999, Worldwide acquired Miami Aircraft Support,
Inc. in Florida and Aerolink International, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa.,
continuing to strengthen its position as one of the world's largest
independent aviation service providers.
