PITTSBURGH, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- In preparation of the March 15 closing
of the Liberty Avenue and Boulevard of the Allies off-ramps from the Fort Pitt
Bridge (I-279), Brayman Construction Company will begin erecting detour signs
tomorrow between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation (PennDOT) today announced.
Placing the detour signs will continue at these times on weekdays through
March 14, but will not disrupt traffic.
PennDOT also announced today that fourteen off-duty uniformed police
officers will be used once work begins to facilitate traffic flow along the
primary detour route and through the city. The officers will be located at
critical intersections Downtown between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Monday
through Saturday.
The primary detour route - which can be viewed at epenndot.com -- will be
the Parkway East (I-376) to Grant Street (Exit 3) to Boulevard of the Allies
to Stanwix Street to Liberty Avenue.
Once the Liberty Avenue and Boulevard of the Allies off-ramps are open to
traffic in late June or early July, the off-ramps from the Fort Pitt Bridge to
the Fort Duquesne Bridge (I-279), Tenth Street Bypass and Fort Duquesne
Boulevard will be closed. Access from I-376 Parkway East, Fort Pitt Boulevard
and Commonwealth Place to the Fort Duquesne Bridge also will be closed.
The outbound lanes leading to the Fort Pitt Bridge from Downtown and
points North were rehabilitated and opened to traffic in 1999.
