Joins TimeSys OnBoard Program to Make Latest MIPS-Developed Linux Enhancements
Available in Commercially Supported and Certified Kits from TimeSys
SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE --
TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in embedded Linux(R) technologies and
development tools, today announced an alliance with MIPS Technologies to make
the latest MIPS(R) architecture and core optimizations running on the Malta
reference platform available in fully commercialized 2.6-based Linux
distributions from TimeSys. In this alliance, MIPS Technologies will join the
TimeSys OnBoard Program(TM), the embedded Linux industry's only comprehensive
program for hosting, certifying, distributing and supporting commercialized
custom Linux distributions.
The TimeSys OnBoard Program provides a vehicle for continuous delivery of
the most advanced Linux features to customers and partners. Through the
program, TimeSys rapidly packages, maintains and supports commercial
TimeStorm(R) Linux Development Kits (LDKs) with the latest feature
enhancements developed by and with OnBoard Partners. TimeStorm LDKs developed
from the alliance with MIPS Technologies include complete MIPS architecture
and core-optimized embedded Linux distributions with ready-to-run target
images (kernel and root file system) and an Eclipse 3.0-based
cross-development environment to facilitate application development, as well
as kernel and device driver platform customization.
"The OnBoard Program makes the latest Linux optimizations from MIPS
Technologies available to developers in commercially supported Linux
distributions from TimeSys," said Russ Bell, vice president of marketing for
MIPS Technologies. "Through our alliance with TimeSys, developers gain access
to the most advanced MIPS Linux optimizations in a fully supported
distribution from a leading embedded Linux vendor."
Under the alliance, TimeSys and MIPS Technologies will collaborate to
create TimeStorm LDKs that support a broad subset of the entire MIPS32(R) and
MIPS64(R) processor core families, which are ideal for digital and interactive
television, set-top boxes, DVD and other performance-driven applications. The
initial LDK delivered from the alliance will support the MIPS32 4K(R),
4KE(TM), 24K(R) and MIPS64 5K(R) core families.
TimeSys and MIPS Technologies have also agreed to use the OnBoard Program
as the vehicle for developing additional TimeStorm LDKs with advanced feature
sets such as MIPS integrated DSP extensions, and for future MIPS cores as they
become available. TimeSys and MIPS Technologies also intend to offer the
benefits of the OnBoard Program to MIPS' licensees as a collaborative
environment for ensuring the continuous and rapid availability of the latest
commercially supported Linux and tools throughout the MIPS ecosystem.
"OnBoard is changing the way that embedded Linux is brought to market,"
said Larry Weidman, president and CEO of TimeSys. "By joining OnBoard, MIPS
Technologies can continuously deliver their latest hardware-optimized Linux in
complete Kits from TimeSys."
