2.6-based TimeStorm Linux Development Kits Now Available for Freescale
Semiconductor's MPC8555E, MPC8560 and MPC8272 Processors
SAN FRANCISCO, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE --
TimeSys(R) Corporation, a leader in embedded Linux(R) technologies and
development tools, today announced the availability of 2.6-based TimeStorm(R)
Linux Development Kits (LDKs) integrating Freescale-developed Linux
enhancements for Freescale's PowerQUICC III and PowerQUICC II communications
processors.
TimeStorm LDKs for Freescale Semiconductor's MPC8555E, MPC8560 and MPC8272
processors include complete 2.6-based embedded Linux distributions with ready-
to-run target images (kernel and root file system) and the Eclipse 3.0-based
TimeStorm Linux Development Suite(R) (LDS) cross-development environment to
facilitate application development, as well as kernel and device driver
platform customization.
The latest Freescale-developed code for the PowerPC and PowerQUICC
architectures is hosted in the TimeSys OnBoard Program(TM), the embedded Linux
industry's only comprehensive program for hosting, certifying, distributing
and supporting processor-optimized Linux distributions. The OnBoard Program
rapidly commercializes the latest Freescale-developed Linux enhancements into
processor-optimized TimeStorm LDKs from TimeSys. Through the OnBoard Program,
TimeSys also plans to offer processor-optimized LDKs for Freescale's new
MPC8360E PowerQUICC(TM) II Pro processor family with next-generation QUICC
Engine(TM) technology designed for packet-based networking and wireless
equipment.
"The OnBoard Program rapidly turns the advanced Linux features developed
by Freescale into complete Linux distributions supported and maintained by
TimeSys," said Lynelle McKay, vice president and general manager of
Freescale's Networking and Communications Systems Division. "We are pleased
to see TimeSys offer commercially supported kits with our latest PowerQUICC
processor-optimized Linux enhancements."
"TimeSys is pleased to make the latest Freescale-developed Linux for
PowerQUICC III and PowerQUICC II processors commercially available to
developers worldwide," said TimeSys president and CEO Larry Weidman. "Through
the OnBoard Program, TimeSys is committed to being the embedded Linux
industry's source for the most advanced, processor-optimized Linux."
The MPC8555E PowerQUICC III processor integrates a wide range of advanced
Freescale technologies, modular cores and peripherals. Leveraging Freescale's
system-on-chip (SoC) PowerQUICC III platform architecture, the MPC8555E
combines the powerful PowerPC(TM) e500 core and communications peripheral
technology to balance processor performance with I/O system throughput.
The MPC8560 PowerQUICC III processor is based on Freescale's e500 system-
on-chip platform architecture. It features an array of leading industry
standards and advanced Freescale technologies, including a high-performance
PowerPC e500 core, a 256KB on-chip L2 cache memory array, an enhanced
Communications Processor Module (CPM), RapidIO(TM) interconnect technology,
dual Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and support for Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR
SDRAM) and PCI/PCI-X.
The MPC8272 PowerQUICC II processor family addresses the cost-sensitive
needs of a wide variety of networking and communications applications. By
offering an integrated security engine, the MPC8272 family is well suited for
networking equipment requiring encryption capabilities, such as small and
medium enterprise (SME) routers, virtual private network (VPN) and firewall
routers, wireless access points, residential gateways and xDSL equipment, as
well as imaging, industrial control and test and measurement equipment.
