Henkel Technologies is First With Cold-Applied, Impact-Resistant Structural Adhesives

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Henkel Technologies is the
first company to launch a new type of cold-applied, impact-resistant
structural adhesive that helps lower costs by simplifying vehicle assembly.
The new adhesive also significantly increases structural strength leading to
improved vehicle handling and safety.
Henkel Technologies' cold-applied, impact-resistant adhesive can be
dispensed using existing equipment at temperatures of only 80-100 degrees
Fahrenheit. In addition to being simple to use, the material also retains
superior strength. The adhesive is formulated to absorb energy during impact,
channeling it to the body structure, which reduces or eliminates failure of
the bond seam. Traditional structural adhesives require specialized equipment
to achieve dispensing temperatures of 100-120 degrees Fahrenheit and the bonds
are often more likely to fracture when impacted.
"Most North American manufacturing facilities already have cold dispensing
systems, so our adhesive can be used without investing in new equipment," said
Matthias Hoffman, vice president, marketing and business development, Henkel
Technologies.
In addition to the new cold-applied, impact resistant adhesives, Henkel
Technologies offers a complete range of advanced structural adhesives, parts
and foams -- all of which increase vehicle strength, durability and noise,
vibration, harshness (NVH) characteristics of the vehicle.
Henkel Technologies partners with customers to tailor products and
technologies to meet specific needs and challenges throughout the vehicle.
For example, replacing spot welds or rivets with structural adhesives improves
the impact characteristics of the vehicle, while improving occupant safety,
vehicle handling and useful life.
"There is dramatic potential for cost savings by using structural
adhesives," said Hofmann. "While some welds and fasteners would still be
necessary, a large number of the 1,400 welds needed to build a car could be
eliminated, saving $84 per vehicle which could translate into millions of
dollars saved."
