Dr. Attila Molnar to Join Board of Bayer AG

  
 Dr. Martin Wienkenhoever Named New General Manager, Basic and Fine Chemicals

    LEVERKUSEN, Germany, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Attila Molnar (50),
currently General Manager of the Basic and Fine Chemicals Business Group, has
been appointed to the Board of Management of Bayer AG, effective April 1,
1999.  His appointment was announced today following a meeting of the
company's Supervisory Board.

    From May 1 Dr. Molnar will sit on the board committees for technology and
environment and for marketing and logistics.  He will also become chairman of
the central committee for environmental protection and safety, which makes him
responsible for environmental protection in the company.
    Dr. Dieter Becher (62) will retire from the board at the end of the annual
stockholders' meeting on April 30 and start his pre-retirement leave after a
32 year career at Bayer.  For almost nine of those years he was on the Board
of Management.
    The new board member was born in Thalmaessing, Bavaria, on August 17,
1948.  After completing his chemistry studies with a doctorate from the
University of Erlangen, Dr. Molnar joined Bayer AG on March 1, 1978, as  head
of a manufacturing unit in Leverkusen.  After two years he joined the Bayer
subsidiary Mobay (now part of Bayer Corporation) in the United States where he
worked in polyurethanes manufacturing in New Martinsville and Baytown.  He
returned to Germany in 1983 to head up the TDI facilities in Brunsbuettel.
    In 1986 Dr. Molnar returned to the United States where he was responsible
for polyurethanes, coating raw materials and specialty products manufacturing
in Baytown.  In 1988 he moved to the U.S. headquarters in Pittsburgh and was
given responsibility for all polyurethane manufacturing in the USA.
    He returned to Leverkusen in 1990 as head of worldwide manufacturing
operations for the Coating Raw Materials and Specialty Products Business
Group.  On April 1, 1996, he was appointed general manager of the then Organic
Chemicals Business Group.
    Effective April 1, the General Manager of the Basic and Fine Chemicals
Business Group, which was renamed and given a wider product portfolio on
January 1, 1999, will be Dr. Martin Wienkenhoever.
    Dr. Wienkenhoever, born on August 1, 1956, attended highschool in
Lengerich, Westphalia, and went on to study chemistry at the Wilhelms
University of Westphalia in Muenster.  He joined Bayer AG in 1985 after
gaining his doctorate, first as head of a development and formulation
laboratory in the then Dyes and Pigments Business Group, moving a year later
to head the dyestuffs research laboratories.
    From 1988 Dr. Wienkenhoever spent several years in the U.S. with Mobay
Corporation.  At first he led the research and development team in the dyes
division.  In 1992 he was appointed head of R&D in Mobay's organic products
division.  A year later Dr. Wienkenhoever returned to headquarters in
Leverkusen as head of dyestuffs development and later of marketing.  Most
recently Dr. Wienkenhoever was responsible for the reactive dyestuffs business
group at DyStar Textilfarben GmbH, a 50-50 Bayer-Hoechst joint venture.
    Dr. Wienkenhoever is married and has four children.
